DroidTV MX or Roku?

I wonder if it's possible to load the DroidTV MX/Midnight MX2 firmware onto one of those $70 Aliexpress machines? You might even be able to pick up a further discount using one of their new buyer coupons. There are several different versions of this box on sale at DX so it's probably worthwhile to wait for user feedback.

Not the midnight mx2, they code their firmware because come many knockoffs where using it.

Hey Yotch,

Why take a chance to save a couple hundred bucks, it might cost you more in the long run

Thanks jack, one last question. Do u find the unit overheating have u played it for extensive periods problem free?

My wife has used it the most (3-4 hours at a time) and hasn't complained once.

The MX doesn't produce much heat so I don't think there are issues with overheating.
 
I'm contemplating getting one of these. Do you by any chance run Plex on it? I would like to know if there are any issues.

It's a media player app like xbmc but will be difficult to test as it relies on a server side connection. Hmmm. I'm wondering now if I should rather get an Ouya. There are apparently some issues with Plex on the Ouya at the moment but it looks like they are going to be sorted out quite soon. Nice thing about the Ouya, besides its build quality, is the fact that there will be lots of support for it as well as hacks/mods in the future compared to some Chinese Android media player.

Prices are round about the same too. Can order from Amazon for about R1,500 bundled with one game controller.
 
If I remember correctly there is a discussion about the Midnight MX2 and Plex in that Youtube video I posted in reply #4 earlier in the thread.

Hi DrJohnZoidberg

I did some more research and ended up installing the Plex server. I then added my TV-Show folder to the Plex library, installed the Android application and was able to navigate the library and play all the shows I added. All the covers, plots, etc, were there when I launched the Android app on the MX

@lcbxx: I am under the impression that Amlogic ARM processors are the only Chinese devices that provide proper graphics hardware acceleration for XBMC. There are workarounds for Rockchip processors but the Amlogic based devices appear to currently offer the best XBMC experience. It also appears that the android/linux XBMC development is focussed on this family of processors. The Amlogic devices have been available for a lot longer than the Ouya so the XBMC experience would presumably be better.
 
@jacksback... will this pick up a 3tb external hardrive? Considering getting one of these if it does
 
@jacksback: Can you stream any of these live Japanese TV channels with the standard preinstalled web browser software? The DroidTV MX and the Midnight MX2 currently appear to be the best devices for running XBMC - still a bit pricey though!
