DroidTV MX or Roku?

I have my Mele F10 and have been using it since yesterday. I'll post a nice review here (perhaps a new thread with a link in here?). All I'll say for now is it's fantastic. Best control ever. I'm testing it with my MX but will test on Windows too.

Anyone know if one can use this device for video-skype? I.e. connect a webcam/microphone and use your TV to video conference.

I'm building a media center for my non-technical parents and going the route of a PC (AMD-A6 / Intel NUC) ends up being very expensive.

If this device can do Skype it would be a great alternative.

I'll test and let you know - certainly skype works but video I'm not 100% sure. You would need to add a USB web cam for one. These days I prefer Google hangouts... such awesome value in there... and calls out are cheaper than Skype. I've just got off a conference call to the US that cost me 10c a minute.

Just would like to thank "Jacksback" and "iaywtimnbe" and all the other members for your input and advise given. I was looking on building my own htpc,price on parts make it not cheap though. Then I decided I actually only need something capable of XBMC. Thanks to Google my search directed me here after I started looking at android solutions. I'm glad most of the huge bugs is resolved,but that thanks goes to all involved in the android and XBMC community and firmware modders;-)

In short I decided(thanks to you all) to purchase my own DroidTV Mx( my old Egreat 31B with modded popcorn hour FW will go to my daughter's room:twisted:) . And I can now also vouch that the members positive remarks regarding AVsupply is true. Thanks for being helpful on forum with questions and over the telephone. Was refreshing to see that kind of good service again. Can't wait for my DroidTv to arrive(hope customs is in good mood,lol)

Awesome! Please post any q's you have or suggestions. It's a great box. When I think about it - I sold my Roku and my DroidTV purchase gave me:

1. A box that I can customize
2. An awesome browser
3. Casual gaming
4. Plenty of movie players
5. Streaming media player for Hulu, BBC, ABC, Netflix, etc.
6. NAS box for my 2Tb external HDD - nice and fast over Ethernet using SambaDroid (bind to eth0)
7. NZB downloader with web interface for remote administration and queueing using NZBGet
8. Torrent downloader using utorrent
9. Along with the Mele F10 pro, an awesome wireless remote

1) Do you use the native android apps for streaming or xbmc?
2) What other streaming apps are there? I currently use BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Watch ABC, ITV Player. I wish I could find something for Discovery and Nat Geo.

I use native apps for streaming those channels. XBMC for ntv.mx since it doesn't have a native app AFAIK.

Are you able to stream wiziwig sports streams from sites like cricfree.tv on the DROID?

Not as far as I can tell (those are flash sites).
*EDIT* I got it playing but with ads in front, I'll see if I can use adblocker to get rid of those. The box does come with a flash player though how practical it'll be for these web pages, I don't yet know.

Don't worry, the DroidTV is years ahead in firmware development and performance.

The Quad core is more geared towards those that want a Mini computer and/or Android games console. XBMC is pre-installed but HD playback isn't as smooth as it is on the DroidTV. There are better firmware updates coming but we're still months away from a quad core Android media player that can compete with the DroidTV

Hopefully that puts your mind at ease? :)

If you got it working then thats great. I assume its via Chrome? The ads are closed by clicking the small x's in them. Cheers.

I did it via the Flash application itself - I'm not sure which browser it uses (probably the stock one?). I'll be able to fiddle a bit over the weekend.
