DSL192...got it yesterday

Pings would be about 20-30, download speeds should be about 22something kb/s.
Sorry i havnt read much of the previous posts but i believe cemt was getting up to 90kb/s on the 4th of March it seems

Thanks, just wanted to know cause I dont want to waste my time, you know, and from what I've read that Telkoms modem you get with is ***, so what modem should I get

Hmmm cant help you there im afraid. You should however, find a lot about them if you click that nice inviting button that the top that says Search :p

Enter in the keywords: ADSL modem

See what comes up ;)

download speeds have dropped to 65K now dsl192. using Dc++, Nettransport and emule. managed to pull 2gb on 30march

I had sentech 256k and adsl 512 since feb 2004, using adsl for email and browsing and general pc workshop downloads, drivers etc.

Had Sentech hooked up to dc++ and net transport and max download on good days were 12K(if lucky) average 8K and I used to pull at least a gig a night from sentech if they were not down/offline.

line speed is measured in bits. There are 8 bits in a byte.
windows measures downloads in bytes.
so, a 192kbit/s line is theoretically capable of downloading 24kbytes/sec...
but you will never get that because of tcp/ip overhead..

>> That's the theory, but ATM also takes a chunk out of that, ATM has a defined packet size, whether you send 20 byte's of 2kb, the packet size is always fixed, (64bytes if mem serves) plius theres ATM overhead, it's part of the reason that Telkom don't drop the ADSL link speed to 512 and leave it a little above that.

to answer a question posted earlier up in the thread :
your line spead is throttled at your local DSLAM via management software.
all ADSL circuits in South Africa actually run natively at 2048kbits/sec. so dont be suprised if you start seeing telkom offering faster local access speeds in the near future. dunno how the backhaul will handle it!

>> they were running at whatever the faster speed available on the line was, hence some lines I had were at 6Mbit/s

Adding to this, SAIX (IPNET) get's all spare capacity on the ATM backbone when not in use for Analogue, ISDN or Diginet/Martis traffic, the the capping is indeed at the DSLAM (1) to limit bandwidth per user and (2) to limit total bandwidth to all users on the DSLAM.

I have had 192 for about 3 weeks now and it is going great(besides the cap which is rapidly approaching). Sometimes downloads at 40 kilobytes and never less than 20. Its a good option for 1st time adsl users like me.

Frankly i dont c the point of a faster line with a cap. You'll just finish it quicker

if you with uunet ayce or some of the other companies offering more 30 gigs and uncapped then you'll want more speed :)

killadoob, i think you convinced me to go for ayce, your persistance paid off... thanks!

Thanks okes, so you serious like almost 40kb/s? Cool, now to convince my dad 100%, the last couple of weeks he's been backing down from his claim of buying me dsl ( almost like telkom), but hey, cheers
ZZ

thanks cemt, now all I have to do is try and guess your password and I'll be able to use your bandwidth! :P

....hahaha.... no one knows your password

I crack myself up sometimes....

c'mon guys....i edited the username before posting....everything else is 100% except login...

wad i'm trying to say here in the image is I reached 33gb in something like 8 days...not bad for dsl192...

192k/8*90% = 21.6kb/s

21.6kb/s*60(seconds)*60(minutes)*24(hours)*8(days) = 1492990kb / 1024 = 14580mb = 14.24 gig

assuming full duplex, you could do 14.24*2 = 28.48 gig in 8 days.

Nice, you got an average between 90-100% capacity on the 192k

i got the 192 line and the marconi router, all works great and get dl speeds of about 20 kilobytes /s compared to dial ups 1 or 2
