DSL192...got it yesterday

Anyone that already has HomeDSL384 should stick with it, unless they want to be charged ~R265 for downgrading to save ~R100/month.

384k dont downgrade to 192k, i'm just waiting for them to cancel my xtratime400 and then i will upgrade to 384k.. apparently telkop cant do more than 1 thing at the same time so i have to wait once that cancellation is complete.

Ok thanks cemt, just wondering if the speeds were consistently higher than 192Kbits/s, and how many test runs did you do?

Also, I wonder if the reason for the higher than 192Kbits/s speed is purely due to a low contention on HomeDSL192...

PS: Suggestion - use the exe & registration code that RPM posted in the announcements forum & schedule BBST to run automatically for the duration of the test period - you can get it to automatically email the scheduled test run result to RPM - more info in RPM's thread :).

i run about 3 tests, even the quick test, btw loaded bitdefender v8 pro yesterday, dont know how good this av is but it found abt 32 viruses after update and using nis2005 since oct04, also find that the speeds increase if i remove the filter but thn no voice calls

The first week that I had DSL384 I had 50KB/s downloads...but after a week that dropped to 39-40KB/s. I think Telkom's systems take a while to set up the bandwidth correctly....so all new ADSL connections are 512kb/s for a while....

But 90KB/s seems a bit of a stretch (that would mean 720kbps)...methinks that multiple software packages are measuring bandwidth differently. I'm sure most iBursters would be more than happy with 90KB/s on a 1Mbps connection!

Well without trying to be nasty, I think you a trying to impress us and nothing else :/

I don't know why everyone thinks cemt is trying to pull a fast one ...?

My impression of this thread is that cemt said hey, guess what, I just got HomeDSL192 installed, and it looks faster than it should be..., and the response that cemt gets is liar liar pants on fire...

Cmon, no one (:D) is advocating that 192Kbits/s is broadband, the point is it will suite the needs of some & not others, and if the speed on HomeDSL384 was initially faster than it should've been & got slower as more people signed up (or downgraded from HomeDSL512) then we will have to wait and see what happens with the speed of HomeDSL192 as it becomes a more contended service/disservice.

My advice to people who don't have any flavour of HomeDSL is still to start with HomeDSL192 and when it is too slow (contention or whatever) upgrade to HomeDSL384. Start with the least expensive option & then work your way up from there.

The other factor to consider is that Telkomonopoly are changing the DSLAM ports from FastPath to Interleaved, now from what has been mentioned about Interleaved, it allows more distance between subscriber & exchange, and in theory it could improve connection speeds for subscribers much closer to the exchange, so maybe 720Kbits/s (90KBytes/s) might actually be theoretically possible where contention tends towards 1:1.

ic im merely pointing out a small technical fact. ADSL will not go at 70-90kilobytes per second, not with the maximum line setup in SA being 512k currently.

This is similar to me telling you right now, I have paid for fuel R1 per liter yesterday. Believe me, I did and you had to pay R5 or so per liter.

You will tell me im a liar, cause I have no way to proof to you what I paid nor will I be able too. Its not possible to pay that little.

OK Im way of track now but the MAIN point is, dont come here with a first post tuning everyone who knows the ins-and-outs pretty. This is similar to the days of 56k or ISDN where okes would go on about them getting 10-11k/s on 64k channel or 8-9k/s on 56k.

cemt, how far are you from your local Telkomonopoly exchange, and which exchange is it (if you don't mind)?

Clipse, I have no comment.

I don't think Telkom allocates bandwidth to a particular package and then contends it...HOME512, HOME384 and HOME192 are probably in the same contention pool. The bandwidth allocated to the line at the DSLAM is limited. The reason that 384 speeds dropped, I'm sure, is that Telkom neglected some settings on the DSLAMs initially after starting the packages. AFAIK, but nobody at Teklom will confirm it, Business512 gets a lower contention rate during the day (7am-7pm) and the contention rate of the Home packages is increased during the same period....At night, the Home package contention is reduced. Sort of makes sense, and to be frank, so far ONLY Telkom (i.e. not Sentech or WBS...and it's a bit soon to judge Vodacom) has managed their bandwidth with any kind of intelligence. ADSL may be a complete ripoff, but quality of service is undoubtably the best on the market at present

Well I have been wondering how Telkomonopoly limits the speed of HomeDSL384Kbps, and the other thing is the upload speeds recorded by LSM in the January round of testing - there were a few LSM results for ADSL that were consistently well in excess of 1Mbps...

So far this is a thread full of speculation, it would be nice to have some facts like what are the capabilities of the DSLAMs that Telkomonopoly uses...? Some urls pointing to the manufacturer specs for the DSLAMs would be nice...did someone say Alcatel a while back...?

i live in bramley and less than a k from the exchange

Ok, cemt if you wouldn't mind letting the test apps run at regular intervals (can be scheduled to run automotatically) [post=168457]as per RPM's thread[/post] then we can hopefully put the speculation to bed :).

Hi CEMT

Thanks a bunch for the BBST results. TCPIQ results will be great as IC has suggested. I also agree with arf that ADSL is currently the best broadband option in SA (I have some insight into the recent results of course :D).

Regards,

RPM

Afaik their routers behind the DSLAM throttles you down regardless of the 2MB (possibly now 640K) capable line speed.

I thought it was Marconi.

Here is how it looks like

Edit - sorry did not see the rest of the thread :)

more than likely kilobits.
FYI :
line speed is measured in bits. There are 8 bits in a byte.
windows measures downloads in bytes.
so, a 192kbit/s line is theoretically capable of downloading 24kbytes/sec...
but you will never get that because of tcp/ip overhead..

to answer a question posted earlier up in the thread :
your line spead is throttled at your local DSLAM via management software.
all ADSL circuits in South Africa actually run natively at 2048kbits/sec. so dont be suprised if you start seeing telkom offering faster local access speeds in the near future. dunno how the backhaul will handle it!

later -

Probably something like 192(int)/512k(local) for downstream and 64k(int)/256k(local)...

the price for that service would be way too high, unless telkom drops it prices...

We're all working on that right?

Okes, i want to get 192kb adsl ( my dad says 512/384 is a ripoff) so is 192kb if you ask me, but anyways, would you still recommend it, over my 56k ( stupid question) but am I getting what I want, what ping on CSS (sgs servers), how many kb/s when you dl a file?? Please help! Must I just tell my dad sure go for 192 and when a better day comes go to 42mb vdsl ( like that will happen anytime soon!) Thanks
