It's a problem on the SABC channel's and Etv as well.

Etv in particular love to have this very loud intro at the beginning of every advert break.

I find the educational channels on DSTV very soft, so you have to turn it up to hear. Then the advert breaks are so loud you have to mute them or your TV will break

Always been like that, the sound needs to be able to make through a bathroom door and resonate through to the backyard.

I agree that ads are louder, but you do know that you can set the sound level for each channel? You might have done it by accident in the past and that is why some channels are louder than others.

definitely irritating when you have to do the scrambel for the remote. done on purpose to pay the bills.

Hi folks

We are doing an article on the perceived higher volume of ads on DSTV than the programs. Can you please say whether you think the ads are louder than the programs?
I don't think it's perceived, it's definite. I've noticed it on almost every channel that I watch frequently.

I'm sure the volume change could be used to skip the ads somehow on a PVR.

The ads are louder for me too.

But something that pi$$es me off more is the bloody Carte Blanche intro! That thing must be double your normal volume easy. I think they made it that way so that no matter where you are in the neighbourhood, you will always know it's time for Carte Blanche.

Slightly off topic, DiscoveryHD is a lot softer than other channels...Volume on 50% on DiscoveryHD, then changing to a diff channel I wake up the neighbors!

Yes, Freaken irritating .....

Now every time ads are showing I go channel hopping just to avoid the cwap. :D

Hey my dual view SD PVR does not have ANY sort of per channel sound level settings what so ever other than the normal remote volume up & down! Someone posted the method to set the individual levels previously on this site and I checked my SD PVR! mine does not even have the menus. wish it did - perhaps u know another way to set them?

this volume thing is a pain in the ring man!! I change channels and then flip back after a few minutes - my timing is impeccable:p so screw u DSTV & AD people!

Why r there ADS on PAY TV anyway!!

weired thing is I don't have any sound when I watch South Park on my TV2:confused: the only channel on DSTV that goes deaf when South park is on?? WTF:mad:

Related: the old SD decoder (and, I think, SD PVR) have a {full - half volume - full mute} cycle (that IS necessary during the intrusively loud ads) - I don't recall seeing it on the (Pace) HD PVR - did I miss it, or is it not there?

Somehwat OT: unc' rpm: "DSTV advertisement volume loader than programs? " ...loader? :D

Thats cos you dont have a 5.1 system connected to it, and that channel only has a surround sound option at the moment, no normal stereo

It's most definitely louder, like double the volume during adverts. One of my reasons for cancelling.

Slight OT: Wtf is up with the HD PVR volume jumping up and down and sometimes just disappearing?

YES they are louder and it's bloody annoying.
However as far as I can tell this is standard advertising practise on any channel.

sorry to sound dumb here but what are "adverts" ?
