DStv cancellation, downgrade changes

Yea that was a nice "feature" of dstv to be able to go up / down as you wanted to.... bye bye flexibility

DSTV Rep had this to say:

"There are definitely cases for exceptions, i.e. holiday viewing with conditions attached, technical problems with decoders brought in for repair or swaps (again, under certain conditions). All content providers internationally require payment one month upfront on a per subscriber basis, which also informs monthly billing and the contractual terms and conditions.

As mentioned previously, this has always been part of our terms and conditions, but we have allowed it in the Call Centre and on self service when we should not have."

So you need to pay immediately when upgrading instead of the fee getting added to your account the following month. That's really crap.

so they will allow you to upgrade any time but you have to wait for a month end to downgrade!!! very clever!!

Lets be honest, that was more a massive loophole that was wide open to abuse, rather than a feature :)

What they're doing now is how most normal services work... what they had before was suspiciously over-generous.

Totally... but wasn't it nice to have something in the favour of the little guy instead of the always the shark?
These guys print money...

Honestly - i've never taken advantage of it - wish i did when i went on holidays etc.. but o well... too late now!

Not entirely true. Star sat allows you to request a "rest period" where you confirm before hand when you will down grade and when you will upgrade (at any times during the month). If you want to cancel altogether, you have to wait for month end.

I checked on that. This from the starsat FAQ:

There is no limit to the number of upgrades per month, however an upgrade is only permitted if customer has zero balance. Downgrades need to be scheduled for the 1st of the following month.

Which actually looks EXACTLY the same as DSTV now is, including the pay for upgrade upfront?

I asked for a down grade, and service was canceled with immiediate affect - so fine - it can stay cancelled

So they think we visit their website daily to check on such news. BS monopoly!

When a customer pays the subscription, the contract for that month is fixed,” said MultiChoice

Unless they want to pay us more. Then it's totally unfixed immediately.

Bastards.

That doesn't make it at all clear how pro-rata comes in to it, which is the issue here. Because you pay for the month up-front, the resting period basically means you forefeit the unused time in the month, you don't get the credits back? If you reconnect later in the month, you've already paid for it at the beginning of the month, so effectively lose the money in the rest period.
