DStv cancellation, downgrade changes

That doesn't make it at all clear how pro-rata comes in to it, which is the issue here. Because you pay for the month up-front, the resting period basically means you forefeit the unused time in the month, you don't get the credits back? If you reconnect later in the month, you've already paid for it at the beginning of the month, so effectively lose the money in the rest period.

From the same link I posted:

“Resting period” means a period available to a Subscriber during which time he/she is not liable to pay for subscriptions;

Yes - it saves money for multi-month rests - which is the purpose. Because you pay a month in advance, if you take a resting period, the remainder of the month's payment is lost.

This is very different to what DSTV did, where you could activate your account for 1 day of the month to watch a soccer game or something, and only pay 1/30th of your subscription. BIIIIG loophole!

Ahh, I get what you're saying now. Some might have abused that but this was limited to 1 downgrade a month. I wonder if they will change their policy over December though. A lot of us go away for that last week in December but now you're forced to pay for your subscription until end December even though you won't use it.

First sign of a company feeling the number of resignations/downgrades = stricter resignations/downgrades policy.

Glad I got out before the rush, no need to thank me for the favour tho.

Feb next year I move into my house and will get ADSL then is't good bye Monochoice. Would do it now but mobile data is too expensive to download movies and watch sport online.

This irritates me, I'm probably going to land up fighting with them about this, we keep a decoder at a holiday home and turn it on and off when needed, but there is always someone at the main house pet sitting or just not coming with so they also need the TV at home.

Another reason to cancel monochoice all together, at least Hulu & Netflix can be used pretty much anywhere without major concurrency issues

Boss upgraded/downgraded his DSTV over the past few years seemingly at will. Seemingly in the sense that he would sit on the phone for sometimes up to an hour++ while waiting to be helped. Sometimes he would just upgrade for the rugby over the weekend and would downgrade on the Monday again. He is gonna pop a gasket when I inform him of this tomorrow!

Cant help but feel multichoice are missing a trick here.. the landscape is shifting, and they need to shift with it ... if people seem to be looking for short periods, then why not introduce pay per view options for something like a daily channel view, or weekender .. realisticly, they could open up a whole new market for people who just cant drop 700 odd rand a month, but would happily turn in on on weekends, or public holidays, and the side effect would be multichoice needing to get great content to entice people during the week or evenings etc ...

Obviously this would make a whole heap of peopl change their viewing habits, but they would gain from less cancellations, and would probably get a whole new market segment to target that would be watching their content...

Maybe Im wrong, but Im considering canning it now, where they could still be fleecing me for 200 - 300 bucks if it was a flexible option...

Mines going to stay cancelled now.

+1

I burnt my fingers with this last month. I'm on the EasyView package but upgrade from time to time for a big sports game or so. Anyway, upgraded mid-month last month only to be told I can't downgrade until beginning of this month. Fortunately the damage was only a few hundred bucks, but I'm way less likely to upgrade in the future.

They are closing the loophole where guys just upgraded for the sports over the weekends. Gawd, they are going to COIN it even more now. They are literally squeezing the balls of their clients and there is not a damn thing that can be done about it, unless another company can offer Rugby and Cricket etc.

The overlords at Naspers House, must be having paper money fights and blowing their noses on gold leaf all while laughing at the plebs who are forced to eat their monopolistic coated horror.

DStv is quick enough to put an envelope on your TV if they need something from you.
But when the shoe is on the other foot a notice on the website is ruled as notification.

Shame on you DStv!

This has been our issue too. So far the call centre has been helpful to cancel when we call once we return from the weekend. If you have a secondary smartcard they should allow you to do this.

This would be a good option for them. What will the owners of B&Bs and self-catering holiday homes do now as I am sure having DSTV available played a role in a person deciding where to stay on holidays or weekends away. These owners will not pay for a month of DSTV if they only have guests for 2 weeks out of the month. Either rates of these establishments will go up or more cancellations with Multichoice. Definitely missing a step here.

So instead of getting ~R200 a month from users who would disconnect/reconnect at will, they now will get nothing from them because I highly doubt those same customers would pay and extra R400 for DSTV all month long...

As a business owner, it made NO financial sense whatsoever... I'm a DSTV subscriber and have never used that feature, even though I knew about it. I'm not surprised by this... I would have expected this years ago.

I don't care for Mnet and series (I download them to my Mede8er anyways)... The channels I like, Discovery mostly, aren't available to stream online (AFAIK), so I guess I'm stuck on DSTV and the R700 or so a month. :-(

I could really do with the +/- R 750 p/m saving right now. If only I could convince the Minister of Home Affairs to consider alternatives. One day.
