DSTV Drifta

@martin: Many thanks for the pics. What software comes with the Drifta? Do you think that it could stream using something like VLC?

Found this while playing with different search terms on Google:
The DVB-H standard seems to use the h.264 codec 'but implemented as bursts of data' according to this link: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=46824

Which led me here: LIMBOS - relay DVB-H via Streaming
http://sourceforge.net/projects/limbos/develop

Looks like it's possible but it will take some time to work out the specifics.

What is the max distance that the Drifta can be from the iPhone or PC, or do they have to be right next to each other?
Have anyone checked what the golf picture quality is?

That is one pair of Levi jeans these days ... and it includes 4 months of subscription.

So, walked into an iStore this morning ... nobody in the shop had any idea what a DSTv Drifta was .... had to explained to them that they are listed as official suppliers and that the BIG launch was yesterday ...

:D That is the norm these days.

I wanted to purchase a docking station (with sound) for my iPhone and did some research on the web. Found what I was looking for and went to a computer shop to see if they had it. They did. I took one but then a salesmen stopped me and asked me if I got what I was looking for. I said yes and explained my choice to him. He then started to argue with me about the spec of the device and told me the thing couldn't do what I thought it did and that I should look at somehing else. I put the item back on the shelf and walked out. Bought it somewhere else and it does exactly what I understood it to do. Training of sales staff is at an all time low.

Depends on wifi range or the length of your USB cable. Difficult one to answer unfortunately.

Does anyone know if there are other dvb-h devices that will work, like the usb dongle?

I work about one kilometre from Multichoice's head office and cannot for the life of me get any signal. Just hoping I have more luck at home tonight.

I've found that you have to stay roughly within 10m of the decoder. Moving further away, you first of all get "freeze frames" and eventually you get the message that there is no signal.
As far as the golf is concerned, I have been watching it at work the entire day (which is why I got the Drifta - can't wait for the Super 15). Picture quality is excellent. What I have found however, was that it does not work as well with the cricket where the camera moves a lot quicker. Lastly, you cannot compare the quality on my laptop to that on my iPhone. The iPhone "reception" kick ass!

How do you get any work done? I've made a promise to myself never to take the Drifta to work. I wouldn't get a thing done during S15 between watching rugby and reading rugby websites. :)

Looking forward to the BaaBaas game this weekend! Hope the uncapped players bring the intensity we saw last week against England. Andries Strauss will probably take out there centers in the first half.

Ha ha!!! I actually bought the Drifta especially for work! Always hated following sport on the internet with slow text based updates and timeouts. Watching the golf today was like not working at all. Best was yesterday when I waited for my son to finish soccer practice - I absolutely hate soccer - and after walking around for a couple of minutes, I realised that I have the Drifta, so parked in the shade and watched the 2nd semi between the Titans and the Lions. Not perfect quality as I already mentioned, but still better than soccer.

Agree with the Strauss comment. I think that he is going to cause havoc in the midfield.

Very nice once you get it to work. Screen is a bit small if I want to watch on my TV from the couch. I have been using Windows magnifier to try and get a bigger picture but there is some frame rate loss and obvious quality loss. Any other app you guys know of that will work better?

I started playing around to see if I can get VLC to pick up the stream but no joy as of yet.
