I've only got myself to blame for being ripped off by a DSTV installation company:o.
I just don't want others to fall for the same Bulls#*t.

I've received a HDPVR as part of a Cell phone contract and needed it,together with a 1110 decoder & dish,to be installed.

The cheapest quote I got was for R2500 for the installation including the 1110decoder .

When they gave me the final bill it came to over R4500:eek:

They charged me R15 per meter for the cable used and this was the major cause for the increased bill.

So just be careful of companies adding extras to the bill-always ensure everything is included in the quote.
Also ask if they are a DSTV accredited installer-just because they are well known and have many branches does not mean they are accredited!
The guys at DSTV told me this specific company lost their accreditation due to similar complaints from other customers.

BE WARNED!

Off topic I know but on the price of quotes.

Had this carpet guy come in, say he will charge R390 to clean them etc.

He starts then tells me it will cost R550. My reply, vacum up the rubbish you put down and get the hell out.

Anyways ended up only paying him R390, as it was his original quote.

I've never been bitten like this, typically I want a proforma invoice, and since this is binding the guys usually complete it in the minutest of detail.

Ja, if they quoted you R500 for something, and you agreed to it, and they come out and say "whoopsy, we forgot to add XYZ to the invoice, it will be now R900" they do not have a leg to stand on as the amount agreed to was R500, and you are required to pay R500 - or they can take their business elsewhere.

Learnt it the hard way at one of my employers.

Bloody hell ! I can get good quality low loss cable for DSTV at the Multichoice agent for R3 per meter! You either got seriously ripped off, or he put some seriously low loss cable in.

Were they DStV approved installers? Might be worth while giving them a call and telling them about the issues you had.

dstv is really easy to install. biggest problem i had was the twisting LNB correctly.

go to a Servistar they normaly sell it and the F type connections

i found a website where you could actually calculate the number of degrees, but what i did was twist it till i got the highest signal quality on the DSTV while it was on...

If they quoted you one price then you pay that price. Tell them to get screwed.

Also you could put Petrol on the floor and hold a match they will not even ask you for a buck!!:D

I know a friend who paid exactly that amount this week. He required the same job- hookup of a HDPVR and another decoder (two televisions) which required a huge amount of cable and he lives in a one bedroom flat!
He doesn't even have a flatscreen LCD or Plasma, never mind HD, and says that his TV has been given a new lease on life- the picture is better, and he's a sports nut. Oh and he already had DSTV installed to one point. Maybe he got ripped off too.

It was normal cable.

I found out later that MultiChoice took them off their list of approved installers due to similar complaints.

Hang on - what did you get? An HDPVR and a 1110??
So you would have required at least a twin LNB with cabling for each. As I understand it, the quote is for a 'typical' installation. If they turn up and you are a multi-millionaire with a mansion on 6 acres, they are going to need more cable and will hit you for the EXTRA.

The quote included the 1110 decoder and installation to 3 points.
Normal house-nothing big.I just needed the HDPVR in main TV room and the 1110 in kids room.

It sounds like they took advantage of you. Was it special cable of some sort?

Normal cable.

Sounds like it!

They did use about 160m of cable, but the reality is that one can buy cable for about R140 per 100m roll on Bid or Buy!

Self install is not only for ADSL :) Installers rely on the fact that the 'handy men' type people out there think its too technical to install.

All you need is a drill. I think I can install dishes in my sleep now.

Dude they laid 160m of cabling and your moaning? Wtf do you expect these people to lay 160m of cable for cost?

I am sorry but i do not see the problem, laying 160m of cable and your moaning about the price? i have a feeling your a tight wad who expects everything at cost as you hate paying for anything.

Surely they charge for the laying of the cable as well, i mean if you think about it would you buy cable at cost and install 160m of it for nothing? HTF would you make money?
