Yeah with that I agree... I'm not sure they have the balls either.

They have the financial muscle and all that, but whether they have the corporate willpower to upend the majority of their business model I'm not so sure.

I think they will surprise us, and do some stuff right, but whether they'll go as far as threatening to erode their existing business model I don't know.

I am not so sure. There have been a few articles about this on MyBB. Netflix is in the same category as a DVD store, so they don't compete with DSTV for broadcasting rights. Netflix also has their own exclusive shows, which are quite popular. Netflix on it's own is also not a complete TV replacement if you watch a lot of TV, but it's definitely a start. And once you start, you can't stop :)

Also, check out the article where DSTV is changing their streaming service so that you can only use it if you have a PVR decoder. That does not look like the move from a company that wants a lot of people to use streaming.

When DSTV buy the rights to a show, they've been paying extra to tie up the streaming rights in this country (and probably continent) which will hamstring Netflix quite severely.

how long before MC petition the courts to have Netflix, hulu and other services blocked at the ISP level? they do have deep pockets and this government has shown it will protect SA assets at the cost of the people.

I doubt MC are that stupid to be honest...

They have a monopoly to a large degree, and it would shine too much of a spotlight on them if they tried that.

When i went the netflix route, I thought of a XMBC type of Setup. But for the wife, the rule is "the simpler the better"
Justifies decision to get an Apple TV.

For okes with Unotelly, the best way I found to keep the ADSL Dynamic IP synched with Unotelly is to use a linux box to keep it synched. I just setup a Virtual debian guest on one of my Virtual Boxes and use that.

When https://devuan.org/ is released, I move my unotelly synch to it.
 
Multichoice - masters at the art of providing as little as possible for as much as possible.

I have the champagne on ice for the day they fizzle out and disappear.
 
I have worked with Pieter Geldenhuys a number of times. If he is a futurist, then I can perhaps add that title to my name as well :whistle: Guessing the future of Multichoice is not in the same category as debating the future of thought or the impact of the singularity.

I remember working at MTN and as far back as 2001 or so we were presenting the threat of voip to the margins. Sure, it is a threat, but MTN is still creaming profits 15 years later. We went through the same thing with messaging when mxit came out - it was going to eat our lunch. Sure, Whatsapp has done that, but many years later. The same again with Wi-Fi: we ran around with our 'defensive strategy' in 2001-2003 and it's only now that Wi-Fi is really biting.

The point is the current business model for Multichoice is doomed, but it will take time. During that time, we will see BIG changes in their model (although, like most monopolies, they will be too scared to cannibalise their key revenue streams with disruptive technologies, so the will move too slowly). However we will see the changes (and the court battles, to slow down the inevitable).

I say the first change will be MC won't be able to charge a premium for so much everyday content that is widely available from so many sources. They will lose that fat. That's when we will see the big layoffs. There is always a premium to be had for convenience. Sport may take a little longer, because there is less technology disruption to the model possible (that's something for us entrepreneurs to think about).

In 10 years, MC will still be alive and well - a lot leaner and more focused perhaps and certainly not giving us those big annual increase notes!

Or configure Unotelly with your DynDNS address (or whichever dynamic DNS provider) and have it alone.
For the odd times it does not update, cellphone and Unotelly app does the trick - although this is rare. App used mainly to switch regions.
 
Not if there is still the sport fanatics, something needs to change here
