DStv is going to suffer

I think he is spot on .
DSTV would be history if not for the sport.

I don't disagree with him.. but I honestly think he underestimates the financial muscle Multichoice can bring to this equation.

The DSTV thinktank will already have a new business plan to counter this. I don't think they are unaware of this.

futurist Pieter Geldenhuys ??

oh my rofls

Sports lovers will simply downgrade their DStv subscription and get Netflix over and above that
Oh really. So what indication do we have at the moment that Multichoice will start offering their Supersport trump card on anything less than their most obscenely priced bouquet ?

Exactly. I don't think Mr Geldenhuys has done his homework on which channels are available on which price plan.

They already lost customer share...

The opening should be changed from "going to lose" to "has already lost"...

Just Saying...

I think DSTV's survival strategy from here on out is going to involve a lot of legal muscle.

well, they still have more than a year to make coin while the sun shines :)
and Netflix, while they may intend to do biz in SA... i'm wondering if they've started interacting with the anc and our government, to see what will be involved for them to offer services? we all know the anc has a knack for f'ing up good business opportunities if the offer doesn't go their way.
still, DSTV would do well to offer streaming and 'pick-your-channel'-packages
but i doubt if i'd personally go back to them.... i'm also one of those 'instant gratification' sods, that want what i want, when i want it :-)
and TV has become less of a priority recently... my NF subscription has been a waste the past few months, haven't had time to spend more than about 3 hours viewing NF in past 2 months ... but at least its there when i get a few minutes

“Sports lovers will simply downgrade their DStv subscription and get Netflix over and above that because it has a different value proposition. For people who aren’t sports fanatics, the switch to Netflix will be a no-brainer.”

Orly, brightness? So, on which downgraded package do you watch rugby, cricket and F1?

I think DSTV's survival strategy from here on out is going to involve a lot of legal muscle.

Naspers has much room to manoeuvre, they will probably invest into the competition, amalgamate with the competition, introduce new pay TV services or evolve DSTV. Naspers is also slowly pulling out SA, however their subsidiaries will still stand and adaptation or even adopting to their competitors strategy will be a requirement. Yes, herein there will be many legal battles.

Netflix should have been here years ago but DSTv monopoly prevented them from coming.
I don't think so. Netflix is only expanding to countries like SA now. Its a Netflix issue that they are only arriving next year.

I have recently joined DSTV again for the cricket world cup to get the sport 2 months. Going to cancel after the last ball of the world cup.
The ads and reruns are totally unacceptable for the amount you pay. Its nauseating flicking through channels one after the other with reruns and adverts. I counted some ad breaks at nearly 10 minutes.

Netflix will kill this model

How about factoring in the price and availablity of decent broadband... I think that messes with the Netflix business model in South Africa. The only viable broadband options will be ADSL 10mbps+ or FTTH uncapped, both of which don't come cheap and are not available in many areas in South Africa. The wireless options like 3G & LTE don't offer any affordable uncapped services.

So if Netflix are to have a decent impact on MonoChoice... it'll be very reliant on a successful national broadband roll-out to the masses!

I'm streaming Netflix on a 4mbps line @ 720p and from what I've heard you can get it to stream somewhere in the 480p region on a 2mbps line. The amount of data it consumes is another matter, though.
Apart from the sport, some people may stick to DSTV because of the age of most Netflix offerings.
