DStv Jumbo Universal Remote from MultiChoice

This might be worth buying just for the illuminated keypad. I can't understand why companies don't ship remote controls with illumunation. How are you supposed to see the buttons when watching a movie / series / regular TV in the dark?

This has always irritated the crap out of me. Anyone else here feel the same?

Agreed iCubed.Saajid

Not only DStv remote (although you use the most) but other remotes as well.

It is just not practical to invest in a expensive remote. I am talking about the R5k ones.

The ergonomic design of the remote means that it does not need to be pointed towards the decoder to work - instead it can be placed on a table.
You mean it has a light bulb that emits a strong infra-red light instead of the crappy bulb in the standard remote?

It is kind of bizzare to provide an illuminated keyboard in this "for the blind" model, but hey, why the heck not?

I assume that blind in this case includes the partially blind, which this remote would really help for. Plus blind people are still able to listen to the programs, especially things like news or the DMX channels. It would also be nice to see a Text-to-Speech option included in the decoder to help the user actually navigate the EPG and find out what shows are on when.

Well, I think this is a positive development.

Once my Dad reached 80 he had trouble pressing the increasingly smaller buttons of newer generation remotes. He suffered from a cataract in one eye and swollen finger joints (osteoarthritis).

It was a real mission to find a remote with big buttons, and I never found one. Same story with telephones.

So good to see any company giving some thought to a segment (quite large i should think) of their customer base. Now all we need is discounted subscriptions for seniors!!

Why not? I would really like to know that from you. I have one and I've had it for more than 3 years. Can operate all my devices with it. Even my DSTV remote is lying in the drawer. So please tell me why YOU think it isn't practical.

how much are the remotes going for?

Really?? You couldn't read through the entire article to see the price at the bottom??

I never said unpractical. Expensive yes. But that was before I saw what they were going for.
To spend R500/R600 on a remote isn't that expensive for me. I thought the entry level one's started at R2k+ but that is not the case.

So why have a special remote for them?

The correct term is actually visually impaired and not blind - not semantics as its either you see sh*t or see like sh*t

Personally I'm the latter, have issue with seeing at night due to eye fatigue and I would seriously consider this. Also great for kids like my 3yr old as oversized buttons work better for them.

Don't bother with this remote control ... there's no mention in the instructions anywhere of how you can swap between TV1 to TV2 on a PVR using the remote. The instructions say it is set by default to only control TV1 - no mention if this can be changed ... and the DSTV helpline are just as clueless.

Update - it gets better. The remote is only intended to control 2 separate devices ( i.e. TV1 and a separate deivce )

If you wanted to to control TV 2 on PVR - you would have to individually teach the remote control each & every button that you wanted it to 'learn' from the std PVR remote.

And this was a device meant for non-tech people!

Even switching between the 2 separate devices on the remote control is non-intuitive ( push the 123 button and the LANG button ) Oh yes - everyone would guess that.
