DStv Jumbo Universal Remote from MultiChoice

@mitchmagi,
I am sorry that your experience with the Jumbo remote has not been a satisfactory one.

MultiChoice's intentions with this remote control were to help assist various groups of individuals who had a difficult time operating the standard remote control.

Over a period of almost 1 year, MultiChoice and Beyond Platinum sat down with various groups of people to try and put together a design that would help cover the needs of as many people as possible and after a lot of effort and multiple tests, we finally had a design that could help achieve those goals.

There were many factors to consider when doing this remote: The final product had to be affordable and the design and features had to accommodate a variety of individuals all with different needs – just to mention a few.

I will do my absolute best to explain the below points that you mentioned:

Don't bother with this remote control ... there's no mention in the instructions anywhere of how you can swap between TV1 to TV2 on a PVR using the remote. The instructions say it is set by default to only control TV1 - no mention if this can be changed ... and the DSTV helpline are just as clueless.

Under “Programming your decoder” in the instruction manual, it states:
“Find the code for your decoder on the reverse of this manual” – it then proceeds to explain how to change between controlling the different decoders.
As you should see, the codes listed include all MultiChoice decoders including TV1 and TV2.

A small correction to your statement above where you mention; “The instructions say it is set by default to only control TV1”
The correct wording in the instruction manual is; “The Jumbo Remote by default is set to control TV1……..” and does not mention “…only control TV1”.
As I mentioned above, the Jumbo Remote is able to control all MultiChoice decoders.

Update - it gets better. The remote is only intended to control 2 separate devices ( i.e. TV1 and a separate deivce )

The Jumbo Remote has 2 separate Modes, however one of the features that we chose to include with this remote control is “IR LEARNING” which would allow you the flexibility of adding your own commands to each of the buttons in both Mode1 and Mode2.
Example: You could set Mode2 to control your TV, your AMP as well as your DVD player using IR Learning.

If you wanted to to control TV 2 on PVR - you would have to individually teach the remote control each & every button that you wanted it to 'learn' from the std PVR remote.

The remote comes with 2 individual modes:
Mode 1 is reserved to control all MultiChoice decoders, including the option of controlling either TV1 or TV2 of the HD or SD PVR.
Mode 2 is reserved to control another device such as a TV, Amplifier, etc….
As I mentioned above, we also decided to include an IR Learning feature which would allow you the flexibility of adding your own commands to each of the buttons in both Mode1 and Mode2.
Example1: You could set Mode 1 to control TV1 of your SD PVR and using IR learning you could program Mode2 to control TV2 of your SD PVR.
Example2: You could set Mode2 to control both your TV as well as your decoder using IR Learning.

Even switching between the 2 separate devices on the remote control is non-intuitive ( push the 123 button and the LANG button ) Oh yes - everyone would guess that.

You are correct in saying that this is not something that a person would be able to guess but we did include this information in the manual.
The Reason for swopping between Modes using the “123” + “LANG”, is due to internal programming and functions of the remote control, as well as the fact that we felt it would be quite simple for a person to remember to use a button located at the exact top left corner of the remote control as opposed to selecting a button located in a random location on the remote control.

Please also keep in mind that when designing a remote control, there are allot of things to consider and although it may look easy to just add an extra button or two, or add an extra feature for that matter, there is allot more to it.

I must say that since its launch, the response to the Jumbo Remote control simply as a replacement for the standard remote control has been phenomenal (much more so than expected) and once again, I do sincerely apologise for any negative experience that you’ve had with the remote and I can assure you that all your comments are appreciated and have been recorded and will be taken into account for any future improvements.

All the best
The Beyond Platinum Team
