DStv Lite versus TopTV

We should be able to buy individual channels.

I would be willing to pay R99 for Supersport alone.

The real future is VOD - Video On Demand. Like porn sites. You buy a certain amount of minutes and watch what you want. If your minutes are up, you can buy more.

Sadly TV is so far behind and it should have gone VOD long time ago - now it is being leapfrogged by Torrents - which is not to hard to make legal if broadcasters start working on it now.

I'm afraid TopTV has a long way to go before it makes DStv Premium look like a bad deal in my book.

Why didn't they just open TopTV (only the channel) on normal broadcasting for a month or two, see it as a trial. I mean people will then get hooked and know what it’s all about!

I think comparing some of the channels might be a bit misguided..

SS Blitz isn't really a channel, just a 5-10minute highlight reel (as I remember), and I have no idea what SS Action is on the Lite bouquet... No idea what the sports channels on TopTV actually have.

I wonder if DStv Premium would be any cheaper if you could switch off all the Sport, News and religious channels.
I seriously hated those... They could then call it DS-tee-vee and rename the old one with all the Sport, News and religious channels DS-bore-me.

Well, I, for one, would like the option of TV without sports, if that is what I want. I am tired of paying through my nose so that other people can watch the entertainment of their choice. Think about it: who pays for the Curry cup? ABSA customers, of course! Who pays for the Vodacom Bulls branding? Why, I do, with exorbitant cell phone rates.

I would love to see the day that we get to choose whether we want to subsidise sports, or not. I mean, most sports fans probably would not mind explicitly paying an extra R30 per month banking charges to sponsor their favourite sport. But I want the choice to opt out ...

For R99 at TopTv you are getting way more than DSTV Lite. Also there is a bit of something for everyone in there. The EPL games maybe delayed but you are getting some EPL which is better than no EPL from a low income groups perspective. Then there are channels within that R99 package that caters for the various community groups within SA, unlike DSTV where you would have to sign up for a dedicated package that airs similar stuff.

and can we get a comparison of DSTV's premium for R550 and TOPTV's premium for R260.

People are paying R99/R260 to watch reruns of seriously old series/movies/shows. Makes R600 for DStv + HD look cheap. That's the point I'm making.

I managed to get hold of Someone
at the TOP Tv Offices and I was told that were/are having issues with their call centres

Tanks for letting us know I have run p a huge bill already adn the month has just started ...

The cheapest still is about R350 per month for uncapped ADSL and you download what you want. That is one of the reasons I downgraded from Premium to Select - I can now watch FlashForward, Mentalist, V 2009, Desperate Housewives, Lie to me, etc... with out ads and its cheaper than having to pay R600 for a bunch of sports, news and gospel channels I do not want anyway. The only reason I am on Select2 is KykNET which shows Binnelanders.

And how is that different from DSTV exactly?

Huh? People are paying R600 to do the same thing on DSTV and you say it looks cheap(er)?
And don't tell me DSTV is current. One example: The Bill is arguably the most successful UK drama ever having started in 1984. The series is likely in it's last season (26) in the UK - MNET Series is currently on the 1840'th episode of around 2400.

I'm not saying R600 for DStv is cheap. Yurra, it's actually friggin expensive considering what we're getting. But it is what it is since there is little to no competition, even from uncapped internet. And if you've made the effort to go and watch what is on the "premium" package from TopTV...geez, I have to say that the early adopters of TopTV have nothing from me but sympathy.
