DStv Lite versus TopTV

I'm not saying R600 for DStv is cheap. Yurra, it's actually friggin expensive considering what we're getting. But it is what it is since there is little to no competition, even from uncapped internet. And if you've made the effort to go and watch what is on the "premium" package from TopTV...geez, I have to say that the early adopters of TopTV have nothing from me but sympathy.

Well, if you compare it to the compact package (comparable in price), then it's fine. But if you have R600 to blow per month on TV entertainment, then feel free to crow about whatever it gives you - certainly not value for money in my books :p
I watch my F1 live on peer to peer these days anyhow. Not HD for sure, but it gets the job done!

I just want to watch the rugby :( Why don't any of the pay stations cater for consumers like me? All I need is SS1.

Makes 2 of us!! Only reason why i'm sticking with DSTV, sport channels, KykNet and MK, they should honestly give us consumers the option to customize the channels we want and then work out your montly price based on that.

Okay , the reason we wont ever get to choose the channels we want to see and have access to on DSTV , is because the useless crap wont ever get sold or even aired . Let be honest how many people who subscribe to Soweto TV ? With the amount that actually would , it will never keep that station alive or afloat ! So we are paying for useless tv channels subsidising them even though we dont watch them at all .

Imagine if DSTV allowed us to choose the channels that we wanted to watch and then added a price to those channels . Lets say Superpsort 1 would cost R40 a month , soweato tv , R15 a month TCM R10 a month ect ect . Soweto tv would then have to go out and market itself so as to attract subscribers , right now we are paying for them to air their utterly useless crap . Lets have a look
the most popular channels . History , Discovery , BBC knowledge , Supersport 1 and 2 . There might be a few others to add , but then you have tons of useless crap as well . If we could have access to the channels we wanted , no other channels would ever be shown .

So we are actually all shooting ourselves in the foot . Stay with DSTV and keep paying for useless crap , but like telkom they wont listen to us , the will keep milking us till the last instead of listening and trying to meet the consumers halfway . They can put on a porno channel , but let those who want to watch it pay for it , it does not mean the rest of us have the subsidize it by paying for it .

Installer problems

Just called the installers TopTV sent to me via sms, they said they have not been told how they will be reimbursed for their installation, the one guy wanted to charge me R1000 for the install! I told him you guys need to find out what is going on, the package with install is R499 but they know nothing!

DSTV Lite still feels a little lite on content. As previously stated in the thread, when you start adding other options to TOP TV, it's TOP TV in front.

And what I think would really swing it for most would be initial outlay of the decoder, dish and installation ... TOP TV is way out in front here (for the time being).

what I hate about any of the DSTV is that they put only the borring channels in their bouquets, Y not let us the customers choose what we want to see?
for instance in their DSTV premium packdage who watches all the available channels? they are not giving us a choice they are forcing us to pay for what we dont need...

Until TopTV has a PVR solution (whether HD or SD) it's not an option for me.
I refuse to go back to being stuck watching only what crap they're airing at that exact moment in time, repeats/re-runs of old movies, adverts etc.

Please explain your view to me so I can also understand it.... you want to record something, so you can watch it over and over... or at a time that suits you, (so get a hdd recorder?) and then you complain about the repeats and re runs at different times/days ?

can the dstv pvr only record dstv stuff? i assume so, so rather get a hdd recorder which trade for fairly cheap now. If you switch to toptv, you will save aroudn R300 per month at least, which will pay off your hdd recorder in no time.

I guess some people just find reasons to complain about anything possible....

Buying a PVR from the service you are watching is just wrong. How will you download the things you record to your PC?
The don't have USB or DVD so its pointless. Rather get a nice HDD/DVD/USB recorder with DivX playback, HDMI and upscaling.

If DSTV stop their own adverts, they would only have content for half the day!:D

Bwaaahahaha - too true. They make so much money - so they constantly wonder what marketing campaign to invest it in. And their clients pay for it!!! pffft

Do all HDD recorders allow pause / rewind of live content? If no, does anyone know of any that operate like a PVR? I have had TIVO so be warned, I'm not easily please lol. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, all HDD recorders does timeshifting.

Well that confirms that it's not clever to get a PVR from the provider unless (as is the case with monochoice), you can't get dual view without it.

I also have a question. With PVR you can record multiple programs at the same time without have to ensure that the spesific channel is selected thus showing on the tv at that time . If you make use of a dvd HDD recorder then you will only be able to record the DSTV channel selected at that time, thus showing on the screen at that time. So lets say I want to tape NCIS on Mnet Series every Thursday at 20h00 then MNET series should be the channel showing on the tv at the time of taping. Hope I make myself clear. If this is not the case I would love to know. Thx
