DStv piracy clampdown

MultiChoice has partnered with the police to clamp down on DStv piracy, which includes targeting the kingpins and users of these services.

Wtf is "DSTV piracy"?
That thing where you can get DSTV services without paying.
It began back in the day with the M-NET decoder, they used to sell a plug in module at fleamarkets and other places to hack the decoder to decode M-NET without a valid sub.
Then it moved onto DSTV and smart card hacking...
Nowadays I am not sure how they hack it.. as I am not really interested in IRDETO's kark

Honestly didn't know "hacking" DSTV was a thing.

Well guess what, the signal can be received by a decoder regardless, all you need is the decryption keys and you are in business. But only if it was that easy in practice... with key scheduling and other means, its kind of very difficult.

Hence not knowing it was a thing. Especially considering that better content can be had for free online using an age old technology called "torrents".

“It warned that subscribers to these services are also in the crosshairs and face penalties and fines for purchasing illegal streams.”

Same old Multichoice.

Knew a guy years ago that was selling a device that decrypted the signal. He was doing it openly and bragged that dstv took him to court many times and failed. He claimed they did not have some rights to broadcast in SA and their signal is only via satellite. Can't remember his exact story. But he kept on selling openly for years.
It was claimed that when dstv started with that "update" every evening/early morning on the decoder, was to stop that.
