SABC*/eTV are quite enjoyable with an automatic add cutter in place. Build your own PVR.

When my dual view decoder went bonkers, I just decided why not build a cheap alternative? It contains all the plug-ins and goodies that YOU like. Not pushed down your throat like your Provider would like to.I've been using VDR for a year and a half now. My MultiChoice account can stay suspended indefinitely.

Obviously the sport guys aren't going to agree, they need their fix and MultiChoice knows exactly where to squeeze.

Right... Going to do a few calculations here.. and they're very basic.

Sky has roughly 9m subscribers (in 2007) and they earned 499m pounds, therefore they're making on average 55 pounds per year on each subscribers.

Multichoice has roughly 2m (2007) subscribers and they earned R1.5b (2007) converted into pounds at that years average rate of R14 to the pound makes 107m pounds. Thus they're making on average 55pounds per year per subscriber.

Now maybe I'm reading this wrong, or its overly simplified but for a company running in the 3rd world effectively to be making a similar level of profit from its subscribers is not right at all... and of course, Sky have a MUCH larger set of services to run and maintain, so something isn't right at MC at all...they should be MUCH more profitable at their current position than they really are.

The problem is toxic South africans think everything in this country is so expensive, you go to other countries and see what food cost, you will be blown away by how cheap we actually are.

They look at first world countries and think we should be getting those prices. South african are known for their moaning about pricing and wanting everything for nothing without actually researching what countries in similar positions charge.

Remember as well toxic that supersport have more soccer matches than sky and that will hit their bottom line.

Just a question to the techno advanced ppl here- how do u get free to air channels on ur dstv decoder? Is it possible at all to get ANY free to air channels from europe? And how do u go abt this? If anyone knows pls pm me...

I would also like to know. By the way, how many free to air channels are there on the premium package? BVN is one.

273 for 1/3 the channels. Go look dstv africa's channels :) a long list of channels, so maybe if hitv had to foot the bill for 10 x as much sport and another 20 or 30 channels it may not charge only 273 :).

I'm still not gonna use DSTV. :p

They can go suck eggs.

I got all I need right here. ;)

killadoob why are you so supportive of Multichoice ripping people off? Do you enjoy the ever increasing amount of repeats? Why can't anyone complain about a price increase that has absolutely no reason other than making sure that Multichoice continues to make more profit?

No i am not supportive but i just feel sometimes we bitch so much about pricing and compare everything to massively populated 1st world countries and then cry because our tiny poor little 3rd country is charging more. I am afraid to say but DSTV is not here to make sure everyone in SA can view it, they are in the country to make plenty of money and i do not think 500 rand a month is a rip off either.

I do not sit and watch 8 hours of tv a day so no i do not really notice the repeats, i suppose if i sat and watched dstv for 4-8 hours a day i would notice the repeats.

I watch mnet, discovery, animal planet, loads of sport, sony entertainment, bbc, history and the movie channels when there is a movie i have not seen on which is very rare because i download and watch so many on the big screen.

I notice no repeats again because i do not watch 4-8 hours of dstv. I do not think there is a tv company anywhere in the world that would stomp on and laugh at supersports range of channel or broadcasting, it must be rated as one of the best sporting networks in the world i would think.

I have lived overseas and most things were cheaper. In addition, people are paid more over there.

That said, even that situation is changing. Rent has been increasing, along with house prices, food, electricity, etc.

killadoob : I fully agree with you, but in some cases.. and MC is one of them, we are being royally ripped off.

Sky should be MUCH more profitable than MC on a per user basis, since they have 9m users each paying their subs... granted its more complicated than this since they have multiple packages, many many more than MC iirc.. and all that, plus alot of the content they use is created in that country, and probably by companies that Sky have holdings in.

Ultimately a company like MC should be maximising the way it uses its income, and not be posting such high profits with only 2m subscribers, hell Sky has fairly often posted MASSIVE losses... I doubt Naspers ever has even come close to posting a loss

this is BU#*$#@& ! From side! Give me some new channels than u can go up the price.

- Reconnection IS A HEADACHE AND PAIN
- I HAD TO GO BUY A NEW DSD WHEN THEIR BU#*$#@& UPGRADE KILLED MY OLD DSD

NOW I MY PAY MORE FOR WHAT?really WHAT?

I will bet majority of you okes here smoke and drink every month and waste endless amounts of money on both items :), yet you moan about 500 bucks :)

DSTV is great i think and well worth 500 bucks. one night of drinking, 2 weeks worth of cigi's. All i do is a skip a night of drinking once a month and can pay for dstv for an entire month :),

At least when I go out drinking spending my R500 I have something to show for it. Many laughs, good entertainment (other idiots) & a hangover to remind me of the good times :)

With DSTv I have nothing, a night spent clicking the channel buttom on the remote forwards and backwards because there really is not much to watch. No laughter, no good memories.

Books are cheaper than both, go to the library and get some good books on loan, let your mind be your screen.

I wonder why dont they increase it even more. South African consumer dont mind being ripped off.
Moan moan moan. Thats all you can do people.
SOUTH AFRICANS JUST LOVE BEING RIPPED OFF

Multichoice always was and always will be a bunch of rip off artists. They are very capable of offering viewers a choice of channels to watch at reasonable prices via a pay per view scheme, but its so much easier to just carry on and rip everybody off. Sorry multichoice I still prefer nobody to you.

legitimate distribution channels??? LOL... you work for a content distributor don't you? Who says their old distribution method is any more "legitimate" than anyone else's? I think what you mean is their archaic old distribution method. They have completely and utterly failed to embrace the internet. And whose fault is that? They are just sore cos someone else beat them to it... and the saddest thing of all is that ... NOBODY IS STOPPING THEM FROM MAKING MONEY ON THE INTERNET!!!

No I don't work for one. They were appointed as distributors because they have the infrastructure. You are paying them for a service.

Oh jeeez! You have bought into their propaganda hook line and sinker... haven't you? Let us know when you are able to look at the real world without the MPAA/RIAA/SAFACT/BSA Bull$h!t colored glasses! :D I have Eff-all faith in those statistics. And most rationally minded people in the world are not so naive.

So you believe that you and every second member on these forums that are stealing movies and TV series over the internet create jobs? Let me know, I have a bridge to sell you.

I already did. I bought more internet so I could download the episodes I want to watch :D

I really hope SA gets the laws to prosecute people like you and all the others that steal other companies IP. They spend big money to make the movies that you steal but you are too cheapskate to pay for it.

Ja, and like I said above... the majority of good little consumerist South Africans just keep paying for it, like good little sheep blinded and herded by the monopolistic shepherds.

Good thing some of us are not sheep.

Let me guess, you are also on the MS is teh ev0l !!!! bandwagon? If I deliver a service to somebody I expect them to pay. Their prices may not be in line of what you think you should be paying but it is still a service and untill something better/cheaper comes along you can a) pay your monthly subs and have DSTV or b) refuse to pay and sit without DSTV.

Do you pay for your house, car, petrol, food etc or do you also refuse to pay because it is overpriced?

Where's the extra HD channel? Wouldn't mind paying for that... One isn't enough!!

No I don't work for one. They were appointed as distributors because they have the infrastructure. You are paying them for a service.

Infrastructure? What do you call the internet? The infrastructure is there to deliver direct to people. But they choose to avoid it. Why don't they go where the people are? Where there is a market? Ohhhh, because they enjoy ripping off people/suckers like you over the airwaves! :D They were appointed because they will toe the propaganda party line. I'm not paying them for anything. I don't believe they have any service to offer me. 50% of what you are paying them might be for a service. The other 50% is a sucker tax! ;)

So you believe that you and every second member on these forums that are stealing movies and TV series over the internet create jobs? Let me know, I have a bridge to sell you.

We haven't stolen anything. Downloading an episode from the internet is not theft. I already proved that to you. Sorry about your ignorance, but just cos you think so does not make it so. And it is not up to me to create the jobs. That is Multichoice's baby. I think they could make a lot of money on the internet... but that is their problem, not mine.

I really hope SA gets the laws to prosecute people like you and all the others that steal other companies IP. They spend big money to make the movies that you steal but you are too cheapskate to pay for it.

You have no idea what I download and what I pay for. In fact I would be very interested to see which of us actually owns more DVDs. Are you game? You wanna come to my house and see my DVD collection? They won't prosecute me because according to the law I have not done anything worthy of prosecution. Save your ignorant rambling for your propaganda rallies.

You guessed wrong. I use, sell and promote MS software extensively. If you care to do a little bit of research you will see I also promote the use of free and open source software rather than using unlicensed software.

I already made my choice. I cancelled my DSTV long ago. Boo Hoo for you. :p

Do you pay for your house, car, petrol, food etc or do you also refuse to pay because it is overpriced?

No, I download my food and petrol from the internet. I'm a thief (according to you), remember! :D

" INCENTIVES"
If you have to rise the price, provide an incentive to paying the extra for example DSTV Compact add Mnet movies 2 ( This is a local channel ), or add a Supersport HD channel to Premium bouquet. Thus the cost of this incentive may be lower on the dstv side of things

Sure the higher income homes wouldn't feel the extra cost, but the others will. In this day and time many people are going to pull the plug on extra costs....

From my side people who remain connected will need a incentive in order to stay

People are going to disconnect...big time
