DStv prices from 2000 to 2012

They just need to follow how MWEB transformed uncapped then they will get less hate imo.

Not a total shocker they didn't want to give out the info the bastards :D.

to be fair most of the increases are in line with inflation. but we do not know their cost structure and they're very secretive it seems. i know sports is getting expensive but not so sure about the other stuff since it's facing competition from on-demand stuff which (referring to the developed world notably USA). if you look at things like epl though, sky sells it cheaper outside of the UK (but that may change owing to the Greek sat debacle).

*waits for the value added argument* hahhahaha

Weird how everywhere else in the world prices tend to stay the same or get cheaper with competition -- this polar opposite clearly show the in effectiveness of Gov... They allowed this monopoly to get out of hand, and now they do nothing to fix it.

Consumers are also to blame -- if you hate this then do what I did, got rid of DSTV 3 years ago and never looked back.

You do know that MWEB is wholly owned by Multichoice (DSTV, etc), do you?

If you look at how much everything else has gone up, it does not look bad.

I also think so. We whine quite a lot when we don't get an inflation increase. I know people are going to say the cost of their business went down, but I am sure their investors want a return on their investment.

Would like to see that correlated with the historical penetration rates and subscriber info, there must be an economoies of scale somewhere, but those two issues aside.. those increases are pretty good compared to cpi
2001 5,8 6.57%
2002 9,1 7.16%
2003 5,8 3.15%
2004 1,4 5.28%
2005 3,4 5.28%
2006 4,6 5.01%
2007 7,2 4.99%
2008 11,5 6.62%
2009 7.1 6.40%
2010 4.3 6.01%
2012 5.0 5.67%

I would like to see the price increases of similar international services of the US/UK. I bet you their pricing did not double in the last 10 years. If pay-tv wants to make more money, they should attract more subscribers, not push the price up, lose some subscribers in the process and then push the price up some more to make up for the lost subscribers.

Agreed but as it is MyBB struggled to get any info from MC, so I doubt if they'll make it available.
Subscriber number must have risen.
Broadcast costs have decreased.
Program costs are an unknown.
Sport and advertising/sponsorships are through the roof...

Well I am in the category that looked to the Internet for my media needs after getting gatvol of these arbitrary price increases in a market sector where prices have traditionally fallen. It is a pity that the DOC is so useless and even more of a pity that so many consumers are so uninformed and accepting of these price increases.

This article is missing quite a few important considerations. If you're going to report something as a journalist, at least report all of the facts and let those facts draw the reader to a conclusion.

So additional things to consider ... how many more channels have the added over this period? What new technology have they introduced (HD)? Come on RPM ... you can do better than this!

PS No, I dont work for Mutichoice but I do work in IT and so have an idea of the kind of costs involved!
While their subscriber base has gone up their costs would have gone up too!

LOL R600 for sports, reality show and cooking channels. Yeah right!
