DStv PVR pricing ambiguity

Multichoice is like Telkom, If u want to watch TV then you have to pay, and because we are the only people that supply movies /sport etc we can rip u off. ( sure TopTV came into play, but they are like neotel are to telkom)

Come Consumer act do something about ripping us off!

Using market dominance. Surely there is an Ombudsman we can complain for that? It's like buying a BRay player, but if you want to use the pause button, pay us R60./month.....

Hmm didnt really think of it that way. but i agree that DSTV monthly subcription for premuim is way too much. Overseas the cable tv + internet + phoneline is one product for about R250.

Compare Apple with Apples and not Apples with Pears. Yes the R559 pm is expensive and yes in the UK you can get SKY premium channels with uncapped ADSL uncapped for a measly £15 pm. But also remember this. The UK is a 1st world country South is considered 3rd world developing. The UK has more than 5 premium pay channels so competition is rife and prices are low. The list goes on. I think the complaint against DSTV is frivolous at most. The HD PVR pricing is always coupled with the extra charge any level headed person with a pinch of common sense knows that.

South Africa is becoming just as ridiculous as the US where people sue and complain for just about every freaking thing. Pay the extra for just stay without it and wallow in the TopTV / SABC / ETV mediocre entertainment

i dropped dstv premium like a hot potato..
sure i miss rugby and cricket..i just go to a friend's house for that..
i have a 4mb line and uncapped internet..yay!
i get all the shows and movies i want within hours of being released from the states.

+1

+10 - So far very happy with Top TV - Fnck DSTV

You lost me there with the Suing bit, it's flippin rare anyone gets justice through the law in this country. And it seems you are outnumbered against the grudges. I assume you probably have never google searched comparative prices for PVR's? And our complaints about DSTV are relevant to anywhere in the world. The UK,US and Australia's cable/satellite TV also fits with the analogy that there's '300 channels and nothing on'

And the general consensus in this thread seems to be that subscription TV's days are numbered, because the internet is taking it's place, and we are seeing it in action...

Maybe you should close your account like the rest of us.

So we should just suck it up?

I'm sure you believe that every luxury item should only be consumed by the rich and elite and should remain over priced for you to use it as a status symbol. Just because we are a 3rd world country does not mean that we should be over charged. In fact, we should be paying less as less people can afford the ridiculous prices.

I am sure there is a huge untapped demand for DSTV and if they were to lower their prices, the increase in sales would make up for the drop in price. Increasing prices is not the only way to increase profits and in some cases has the opposite effect. Look at what Mweb's uncapped internet did to the ADSL landscape and when it was released there were many who said it was unsustainable. It's been more than a year since Mweb launched their offer and I am sure they are not running into losses every month.

DSTV should drop their price by at least 30% and try and increase their subscriber base by the same margin. I am sure this will make them more profitable in the longer term.

i would love to meet the idiots who think that they don't require the PVR fee. I guess these idiots are also the ones who would complain that they didn't expect that their car's would need petrol in order to work (petrol should be inherent in the purchase of the car) and that the car manufactures should be taken to the ASA for not stating this.

+10 i agree they've increased operating costs to bring to market even more over priced products that is absolutely useless to the man on the street
ie bringing in first world services but i thought we were 3rd world ??
so how does that strategy tie in with South africa's demographic ??
it doesn't
so they are just doing what they want cause they are the monopoly and we have to bank roll it thats the bottom line cause stone cold said so

screw u DSTV guess i'm selling my decoders and toptv here i come oh and mweb lol

Your analogy is flawed. When you buy a fridge you don't pay extra to use the freezer

Umm , I've heard of people complaining about fuel prices but haven't met anyone yet who was hoodwinked into buying a car and not thinking they would have to buy fuel. Please extrapolate what your opinion is????

Otherwise don't worry, you are an idiot like the rest of us, in the grand scheme of things.

!

i will never buy a pvr i can't use. i will not pay a fee to use it each month, besides i got a ryaon pvr

Yes Africa and particular South Africa will always remain "eThird World". Who do you think was stifling any competition in the first place? So yes, thanks, I would rather remain TV-less forever then support eAfricans becoming rich by bleeding the consumers dry.

Is a HD PVR DECODER really worth it? I have the normal decoder and it works just fine for me, except, I am unable to record programmes...
