DSTV Rant Thread...

You are joe, YOU are. you're paying a half a grand to watch a couple of guys in shorty shorts running around after a ball :D or maybe you watch it for ama socca!!

what a waste IMO...

Whats the matter, can't afford R500?

Anyways, who's spending what is not the point under contention. You were talking about the use of PVR's since everything is being repeated, which it clearly isn't. But nice try for misdirection there. Perhaps for an encore you could try and insult me again instead of admitting you made a mistake in that post i quoted before?

I didn't make a mistake - Most of DSTv, IS repeated. you'll see ;)

if you wanna see some oke kicking a ball over and over, rewinding and watching him do it over and again, be my guest. I just think paying R500 to do THAT is pretty lame... Don't you have any thing better to do joe?

EDIT: Oh, maybe you should read the OP - post NR1, joe - its DJK talking about how REPETITIVE dstv is - hence the reason why I asked "Why do people want a PVR if most of the stuff is repeated so often?"

I was replying to your post, not the OP.

what I don't understand is why the idiots are buying PVR's? What are they recording since everything will be repeated again?

Sheesh, do I really have to spell it out?

Some games are broadcast while I'm at work/away/asleep. They are not rebroadcast. So one typicaly uses one's PVR, records the game and then watches it later. I'm not the only one in this position, and in my case(as is the case with many others) it makes perfect sense to buy a PVR, hence refuting your statement that people who buy PVR's are "idiots".

Get it now?

I was just pointing out that the TOPIC of the thread was about how repetitive it is - I don't care who you were replying to, i'm Pointing it out to YOU.

Joe, OBVIOUSLY I wasn't only talking about SS1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 - I was talking about all channels as a whole, not just the sports channels.

I still stand my ground, R500 is a waste of money for endless repeats on 90% of the channels.

If you're paying R500 for the odd PVR'ed rugby match - go ahead then as well. I'd rather add that R500 and get uncapped internet, but that's just me.

IMO DSTV is a rippoff.....they really are light years behind :D :D :D

Agreed, it really is not worth the money, unless R500 to you, is what 5c is, to the average man on the street.

Repeats can be useful, as long as they do it responsibly. Some don't repeat immediately (Carte Blanche), others repeat next day, same channel, similar time. Others, following week, same time.
DSTV simply fail to organise what good content they already have.

To answer the question why you would want a pvr when they repeat so much stuff on dstv - its simple:

Even if they are repeating stuff it doesnt mean its conveniet for you to watch the programme at that time. With the pvr you record what ever it is that interests you and you can watch it at your leisure when it suits you. No need to follow the schedule. You can watch half your show now, and the rest later - whenever it suits you.

As for guys moaning about the repeats on dstv - repeats are a norm worldwide. It just happens.

well when 95% of people use PVR's, there is absolutely NO excuse for repeating stuff so much.

What we need with regards to Multichoice or "no choice" as i call it..is for someone to finally come up with a card that has managed to hack the irdeto2 system.

Gamma cards have been out for a number of years now but unfortunatly only in certain countries.
Not sure if they working either...however..
With the system been hacked maybe "no choice" will improve their service and give us the paying customers a better service.

As I said, repeats are the norm worldwide, even in markets where use of pvr type systems are the norm. You statement above is optimistic, but given the trends in the US, I doubt it will happen.

darkevil : A hacked system will not improve service in the slightest... it will just be a motivation for Multichoice to upgrade their encryption services.

Plus hacking multichoice's encryption is illegal, so please don't go espousing illegal activities on this forum.

This could start a nice little philosophical debate. Is it the actual hacking or what you do with the ability to hack that is the issue?

I suppose you could view it as a house with a front door. If I kick the front door in but never enter the house I have still damaged something. Okay. I get that. But let's say that I figure out that the way into the house is to kick in the door but I still do nothing. So what illegal activity have I done? I could also tell other people that the way in is to kick in the door. If they do it am I to blame, especially if the kicking the door in technique could be stumbled on by any number of people?

So I bought this little box thingy and if I figure out what it does, isn't that my right? I suppose that there may be a claim that the encryption used is a trade secret so I could understand people getting upset about it being published - but at some point this may similar to lots of people 'discovering' that kicking the door works.

There is of course the philosophical debate that goes on with this...

BUT there is the legal aspect, which will involve Multichoice prosecuting anyone that publishes methods to circumvent the encryption they use... and that is a reality, and Multichoice would just beef up the encryption anyway.... so ultimately it will be a pointless exercise that will end up with a few people facing serious legal problems, and multichoice just having a better encrypted system

you get those fake sim cards, but they only work for a month (ive heard). great - 2 years worth of DSTV right there!

I have to question whether you have actually seen TV abroad or whether you've just swallowed the DSTV line (& hook, sinker).

The whole attitude there is different. It's a desire to please, to give customers what they want and when they want. They also get a very comprehensive EPG - in fact there's often a choice of magazines with the guide in it, or you can download it (not so here). Programming is well advertised as well. Movies are more recent and selected by people who know what they're doing. They don't select films on the basis of the colour of the actor or whether it has a racial theme. Problems are sorted out quickly - there's little chance of a channel running without sound all day (as on DSTV).
I could go on ... Repeats are done selectively. You would rarely get anything shown in the IDENTICAL time slot as the PREVIOUS DAY.
Did I mention that it's cheaper?

LOL DSTV pick movies with only black people? wow never knew that.

They have been showing alot of samuel l jackson movies i guess that because his movies have a racial tone right or is it he is only decent black actor they currently have in their movie stock?

The bee movie i felt had such a racial theme, i think everyone hated the yellow bee more than the black bee i actually felt sorry for the yellow bee.

LMAO here with that racial theme comment :p

Has nothing to do with DSTV repeating stuff.

Have to admit the movies are more recent (often being shown not long after they are released on the big screen), but they still repeat them all the time, and also repeat really really old movies too.

Seems like you have a different agenda with DSTV then just thier repeats.

Repeats are done selectively. You would rarely get anything shown in the IDENTICAL time slot as the PREVIOUS DAY.
Hardly the case, they just repeat everything and anything. A new season of whatever show is starting they repeat as many seasons of the the previous one as possible. Stuff that stopped running years ago gets repeated. They have different channels to show the same stuff. Discovery, Discovery Science, Discovery Home and Health, Discovery travel and living etc etc. All the same stuff as you get on normal Discovery.

Did I mention that it's cheaper?
Yeah and so what, internet is cheaper there too, cars are cheaper there too, cellphone calls are cheaper there too. We can complain about the cost of anything.

Bottom line, you going on about a lot of different things. All i was stating was that DSTV repeats, the us cable and satellite networks repeat too despite having more choice of video on demand, and the pvr type technologies being more prevelant.

It has been VERY apparent. I'm surprised it hasn't elicited comments before.
