DSTV Rant Thread...

Sackboy...

You kidding now right...oh wait you're not...you actually expect an answer to a ludicrous statement like that?

There is of course the philosophical debate that goes on with this...

BUT there is the legal aspect, which will involve Multichoice prosecuting anyone that publishes methods to circumvent the encryption they use... and that is a reality, and Multichoice would just beef up the encryption anyway.... so ultimately it will be a pointless exercise that will end up with a few people facing serious legal problems, and multichoice just having a better encrypted system

I stand to be corrected......

But MULTICHOICE do not have a braodcasting licence but do have permission to broadcast years ago when the system was hacked.

Without a licence it wont be illigal.

And if it can be hacked i would be the first to do so...just because the service is so bad and the value offered is extreemly poor.

I agree with Sackboy on this one. Please provide proof.

Yeah they have movie marathons of one actor...just like MTV has like a "Metallica weekend" or "Beyonce weekend" etc. Just because now and then it so happens to be a Denzel Washington week or something...they had a Russel Crowe week once, what, does that mean they're racist now.

Come on, not everything is about race!

darkevil : unfortunately you do stand to be corrected.... they do have a license...

and circumventing encryption even if multichoice didn't have a broadcasting license would be an illegal act in this country....

oh and basing your defence on how carp etc Multichoices service is would get you nowhere when they decide to prosecute/sue you...

Sorry what?
I think that you should read the threads in order.

A short cut for you, here is the Sackboy's op...

I have to question whether you have actually seen TV abroad or whether you've just swallowed the DSTV line (& hook, sinker).

The whole attitude there is different. It's a desire to please, to give customers what they want and when they want. They also get a very comprehensive EPG - in fact there's often a choice of magazines with the guide in it, or you can download it (not so here). Programming is well advertised as well. Movies are more recent and selected by people who know what they're doing. They don't select films on the basis of the colour of the actor or whether it has a racial theme. Problems are sorted out quickly - there's little chance of a channel running without sound all day (as on DSTV).
I could go on ... Repeats are done selectively. You would rarely get anything shown in the IDENTICAL time slot as the PREVIOUS DAY.
Did I mention that it's cheaper?

Bunch of useless cnuts can't get their timing right again, which makes my PVR pointless. Set the PVR to record Californication and it started late - not even the additional 9 minutes of recording after the episode was enough. Missed the ending.

TWATS!!!

What a load of drivel...

To Sackboy questioning DSTV picking movies based on race.

Are you saying now that DSTV IS picking movies based on race?
Let me just that straight to avoid any problems.

That is happening across the board on a regular basis now. It isn't just PVR's, we often set the downstairs regular decoder to auto-switch and now we miss the start of things.

Please point out the pattern here...

I fail to see how DSTV is now scheduling programs of a certain ethnic nature for any purpose.

Ok ok, I shall be the very first MyBB forumite to openly admit when they were wrong. :o (surely +100 for me)! Yes, i agree with you Kage. I thought you were saying DSTV picks flicks according to race...only realised you were saying quite the opposite.

Sackboy you suck! :p

Ok, can we let it go now?

Think of it this way....

DSTV has ± 80 channels. Nearly each channel broadcasts 24hrs a day, giving you 1920hrs worth of television airtime each day. Now there's not a chance in hell that 1920hrs of new programming gets made each day. Most series/movies takes months or even years to produce, never mind the costs involved in each production.

Basically put, there will always be repeats, and the more channels that are added, the more repeats will be aired.

Get used to it, because repeats are here to stay...

I don't have an issue with selective repeats. However one channel repeating shows 3 times in one day is going overboard. And this isn't original content either - this is content that was originally aired a year ago, that was then repeated 6 weeks later, and 6 weeks after that, and then again etc - wash, rinse, repeat seems to be many of the channels' motto. It is sub-par in relation to what we are paying imo...

Now there's not a chance in hell that 1920hrs of new programming gets made each day.

That's presuming we want to see brand new stuff every day.

There are thousands of movies, docs, series which we have never seen which they could offer instead of repeating stuff which they probably bought on the cheap.

The 1920 hours is misleading. You need to take off the live channels, sport, news, parliament, etc to get a more accurate number.

You're probably looking at a more conservative figure of about 800 hours of new programming everyday (less the live, news, parliament etc and the adverts on normal channels)...

And I'm damn sure 800 hours of new programming is made each and every day....Given the size of the TV industry and movie industry in the states alone.

Wahahahahaha!

I think the TK is missing a member.;)

Some are limited time: MNET-HD (0800-24:00), HISTORY (1700-00:35)); CRIME (1800-2400)
Others seem to be very repetitive by nature, like BBC World (If you've watched for around 1 1/2 hours it will loop); Russia Today etc.
Occasionally we see the same series lined up one after the other 20-30 times in a row. How off-putting is that.

On SET, they've been repeating the same series Stargate SG1 1,2,3 for years now in a loop. In fact it was always in the same time slot 22:30 (?) and then repeated at 02:30 and 06:30 and then in the morning at 12:30 approximately. This strikes me as very mean because you can walk into Paperweight bookshop and buy a magazine and DVD for R10 with 4xepisodes of series 9 already!! That's how far behind they are.

A very good series, The Shield, is one repeated to death. It started off on MNET SERIES. Then after getting repeated there for a while it was shown on ACTION. Now it's on SET. Sometimes they show it at the same time on both channels, which underlines my point about making the best of what they have. Just notice how they abuse the channels to air the same thing over and over.

Who in their right mind would schedule "How it's made" (DISCOVERY) at 19:30 for months and then after no break, repeat the very same shows at the SAME time AGAIN??!!!!! This is definitely DUMB or CONTEMPT. (both?)
