DSTV signal dropping constantly :(

The LNB is bolted to the dish on a non adjustable arm so if it is a missaligned LNB either the dish moved or the LNB mounting arm got bent. If its a Dual View decoder heat is a problem, those things hate it mine is on a shelf all on its lonesome with no door or back to the cabinet.

Mine is not a dualview but it is less than a year old. It does run really hot so I am gonna first give the cooling a try before anything more drastic...

The thing is days and weeks can go by without any problem and then all of a sudden you get a day or a weekend like now where it is unwatchable for large parts of the day...

Maybe its the mountain calling you. Come hug me or you cant watch TV.
Lol back in my stoner days I might have believed that.

My decoder also started dropping the signal this Friday. Although my signal quality is at 100%, my signal strength droped to 45%. Now none of the SABC channels work, neither does MM2 or Action and also a few others.

The signal strength is not the issue but the signal quality. I have found down here in CT that with a 60cm dish I can get up to 90% signal quality while the signal strength stays around 80% most of the time.

Two weeks ago I thought I'd do my father-in-law a favour and install his DSTV for him. Got the dish, cable and LNB for R500 at Space Television in Brackenfell (the Multichoice agent quoted R800) For some reason I couldn't get all the channels to work. Some just say "searching for signal". This is despite having 80% signal strength and 85% signal quality.

Could it be the rain storms.... Rain-fade causes alot of problems where the signal is transmitted. JHB has had alot of flooding and the signal relay is there.

Don't think so because then it'd affect everyone equally and I haven't had any problems.

A misaligned LNB? That sounds painful! :p

What exactly is my LNB and how do i check it?

AS explained it's the thing in front of the dish into which the cable connects. I had the same problem and found that the technician had overtightened one of the screws on the plastic retaining strap, this allowed the LNB to rotate - it's set at an angle to the vertical and if it's loose gravity causes it to rotate, which means it's misaligned to the satellite signal. Simply rotating it fixed the problem. In my case I made a strap out of a strip of aluminium which now holds it in place.

So, check if the LNB is loose and if it is, get someone to monitor the signal strength while you gently turn it - note it only rotates through about 40 degrees.

If it's not loose, get your installer to recheck.

Final thought - Has anyone strung Christmas lights near the dish?

BTW I haven't noticed an major disruptions in the Meadowridge area.

I just noticed that when I try to watch SABC 1, 2 or 3 through my decoder, the picture and sound break up constantly. Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah :( trying to watch the cricket and it's broken

SS2 works fine so I can watch the cricket. Just the SABC channels which are messed up.

That is odd, SABC works 100% by me, DSTV still sketchy at times....Must still try to take the cover off though - it's putting up a fight atm...

The SABC/FTV etc etc (non Cash-cow channels) are on another satellite transponder. Quite a kuk and weaker one. The quality is also scaled down (if it can get worse)

35cm dishes usually have this trait, but 60cm and above are all ok.

FTV works fine. Just the SABC channels with problems. I just noticed: SABC Africa has the same problem.

I'm using a 60cm dish with a DSD 990.

Signal strength: 68%
Signal quality: 96%
No lower than usual.

had the same problem here in die mid freestate - just unplug it - and whala - mine is now again 100%
OK, I'll try that. I'm in Somerset West (near Cape Town). Thanks.

Its definitely not your signal :D Altho 68% is not a brilliant level.

I've been wondering about that. Do you think I should get the idiot who installed the thing to improve my signal strength? When he first installed my dish, I could only get some channels because the signal was soooooooo weak. He came and improved it, but I've been wondering if 68 is acceptable.

Anyway, unplugging and resetting my decoder didn't solve the problem.

Get him to sort it out. BTW my ss is 90% in Meadowridge. When the LNB was at the wrong angle it was in the 60's.

 90! I didn't even think that was possible.

I assume signal strength influences your picture quality.
