DStv streaming outside SA prohibited

Can someone explain this to me...

I understand the root issue here is that content producers make content, which is then licensed to distributors around the globe. So accessing content through a provider not licensed for that region is the "infringement".

Why then are takealot, kalahari, etc able to sell imported dvds ? surely ster-kinekor or whoever is the local distributor and this infringes on that?

If you're importing it counts as "personal use", so it's fine.

Cool, but not on Roku. :(

I just ordered a R1250 DroidTV MXIII set top box with Android 4.4 and XBMC just for use with NTV. My current WD Live TV doesn't have XBMC support unfortunately, but the DroidTV is a worthy upgrade anyway. Can't wait to get NTV up and running on my TV.

Good call. Let us know when you've got it set up. Would be eager to find how you experience it.

I received the DroidTV this morning. Very nice little device. Much faster than the outgoing WD Live TV - the hardware makes a surprising difference in normal usability. The remote is a bit cheap feeling but I assume the device will support my Logitech universal remote when I try set it up later, which worked fine with the WD box.

NTV was very quick to setup. I didn't even need the downloaded zip file as it was listed in the addon options in XBMC. HD streams look considerably better though on a large TV. Standard quality is worse than standard def on DSTV. If sport is what you're buying a streaming service for, you're probably better off with StreamTVBox than NTV, as it has the superior HD offering. I'll probably switch from NTV after the month I've bought runs out.

Streamtvbox does as far as I know.

Yeah it seems they are. £10.99 for a month. About the same that I paid for UK Premium from NTV, with many more HD channels. Will probably switch when my month with NTV expires.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback. I'd mostly be interested in HD sport, yeah. Weird that the SD would be so much worse, though.

Ok this type of thing really makes my blood boil.

It's exactly the same as iTunes (and several other large online music stores) blocking you for years past from buying any music through them just because you are in a certain country. I am fully willing to give them my hard earned money for what they are providing. You are selling mp3s on iTunes..? YES, I will give you some money for it. You offer to stream Spotify..? awesome, here's my money! Where can I pay? You have Netflix or Hulu or whatever.. here's my money, I like your service and am willing to pay for it.

But why am I not good enough just because I find my self in the wrong country? Who says I'll be here for long? People travel around now more than ever in the history of the world, and the whole spirit of the internet is that we are supposed to have access to great services anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection. But now, just because of some stuck up ou oomies in the top 1% club who are too dumb to understand anything about the internet or how the world is changing they just want to hold on to what they know.

Not even to mention SPORT.. Like our friend @RJMadCat who is in Sweden and would like to watch some rugby. Now I can understand it's one thing if they dont want to let you stream rugby in places like the UK, France or Oz because there are providers there who paid a fortune to show the rugby there, so that is fine. But in places like Sweden, or Germany or Russia where there are NO alternatives, there are no one, not one single station or entity that has one drop of rights or plans to show the rugby there... Then why on earth am I not allowed to make some plan to get it over the internet? If I am a Dstv subscriber with a valid login then I've already given you my damn money to be able to watch it! They don't even let you watch the highlight videos after the game... I mean common!

The bottom line is - someone offers a service and clearly there is a huge demand for it. So much so that places like Unotelly and others are making a killing. It's time that the content owners revisited their business model and really think about it.

So that's it. Rant over..
