DStv streaming vs international services

DSTV premium with satellite dish and PVR. You'll live longer than trying to find bootleg streams that just motherbuffer all the time. There really is no alternative. Are you sure about this? The kodi addon I send you the other day almost never buffers.

Should content creators be paid for their efforts?

If not, how would you incentivise them to create more? Hugs?

I know this is a general comment but for example DSTV pays for the content and then sells advertising on the broadcasts. The content is paid for,
They like to take some cream on top by charging the user for the content as well....
People who consume the service "illegally" still consume the content and hence pay for the content.

Its DSTV's issue that they are not letting more people view the content and hence not getting more revenue on the content.

So because DSTV sell ads they should be content with giving the content away?

How does that work? How is someone watching DSTV from a pirate stream in another country paying for that content? :unsure:

I tend to get the impression that content creators, don't get paid their dues, but that the DSTV's of the world coin it.

I agree it 100% it's better than torrents but it's still a copyright infringement in SA no matter how you look at.

I know people like to justify it by saying they are paying etc and don't want to be associated with people that torrent but it's the same WhatsApp group.

Wouldn't surprise me.

I subscribe to a lot of streaming services but if something's not available I'll go get it elsewhere. It's the mental gymnastics some people go through to try and justify it that makes me laugh. It is what it is, like speeding on the motorway. :)

That is understood, and appreciated. :)

I also have a few streaming services, that I subscribe to, but there are some series that are not available , and I grab them where ever I find them.

They don't give it away. They sell adverts imbedded in the content, this is the premise of broadcast services since the beginning of time.

They watch the adverts. Its DSTV's fault for not capitalizing on this.

Its not that hard. We used to have international rugby, cricket and F1 all on free to air channels. It used to work.

EDIT: I'm taking exclusively about sport here - even though it could apply to other forms of media.

Other non live content should be sold directly or bundled in a reliable service like Netflix.
Its insane that there are movies/series that I can't buy in SA. I'm going to use other means to make those accessible in that case.

Maybe they should consider the fact that it is not about the price per se, it is about the fact that you pay for <10% of usable content. If you look at all the crap that you HAVE to pay for just to watch sports it is just stupid. They are clever with their sports offering. If you want to watch rugby, cricket and motorsport you have no alternative but to pay for 'premium'. With that you get 1000 channels of which 5 offer usable content, the rest is just utter crap. Let people make up their own list and let them pay per channel. Just because you lump in 90% crap does not mean you offer. or add value.
 
Rinse and repeat...from 2019, 2020, 2021 and now 2022.

Come on guys, just say you like DStv.

They broke the SABC, which might have been the motivation for Open Time, as the SABC is no longer relevant, no motivation for Open Time?
