DSTV Subscription Fees Protest?

I would sign that petition, but better yet, I cancelled my subscription.

My biggest concern is that they have all these packages, cater for soccer, but not for rugby (which is what I watch).
Bafana games are broadcast on SABC (in Xhosa). If SAFA can ensure the sport is free for the people, why cant SARU do that too?

The Drifta/Walka range, DSTV mobile, is a great example of how they CAN structure channels. I would pay to have the exact same package as the mobile range on my decoder at home. SS1-SS4 is enough for me.

It's not about willing to get ripped off, it's about there not being any cheaper alternative.

There are alternatives, you just aren't willing to consider them.

What do you guys think about organizing a protest to the current DSTV pricing? This can be done by having maybe pledging to unsubscribe on a particular month in protest of the exorbitant pricing of their packages. My main issue is the lack of choice, particularly when it comes to sports packages, which forces us to pay for the full package.

Disclaimer: This is merely a feeler and I am not responsible for any financial or legal consequences of my post. Just looking to see if others feel the service is lacking options and is overpriced.

Comments?

Dude, a lot of us have already unsubscribed permanently years ago.

That is the best form of protest. ;)

If you keep unsubscribing then the prices will keep going up to make up for the lost subscribers :erm:

Isn't it obvious why though?

Stereotypically poor black people watch soccer and rich white people watch rugby.

Is this really even a question?

Just try convince 5 people you know to cancel. Classic "security blanket" reaction. Easier to get people to quit smoking. Once you've quit though, the mind is clean and free, the real entertainment begins. Those who can't go cold turkey, should at least downgrade until they're clean.

They are trying to break in to different markets. If you look at those cheaper packages its quite obvious, soccer/hiphop/gospel/BET if you like that stuff they are aiming at you.

Its not too much to do with the lower income bracket an more to do with attracting people who don't have DSTV and might want those things.

Back in the old days when hardware was slow they could only decode a single channel at a time. Then the hardware got faster and all we needed to see more channels was faster hardware but what did MultiChoice do? They ask you an additional R50 to “manage” this capability!

And now even when the hardware can decode multiple (much more than 2) channels simultaneously and should only be limited by the hardware you choose to buy they are now stuck at only two channels and keeps on pocketing money for a service they are not actually performing (the hardware does the work while they don’t have any expenses to make this possible).

And if they can use tricks like this to get money for nothing I will not make use of their services…

It's no secret that premium subscribers pay a premium to subsidise all other packages. It's now time they carry their own load.

1.Cancel DSTV
2.Pay R689 p/m (line + data) for a 4Meg uncapped account at mweb.
3.Torrent the things you actually want to watch.
4.???
5.Profit

Oh and use DSTV's online channel guide :D

Agreed, it is an extremely anti-consumer policy. Also, the circumstances of abusing their monopolistic dominance in the market against TopTV's entrance was and is a slap in the face of every consumer.

If you can afford it, great.
If you can't, don't.
Seriously, it's not like we're talking inflated bread and milk prices.
DSTV is a LUXURY.

Since that is your reasoning, I assume you will never ever complain about the price of a luxury item? Since it is a "Luxury" after all.

You don't see people complaining about Louis Vuitton.

DSTV is highly over priced, we have DSTV in our house but i never watch it I download what I want to watch and i dont have to wait every week for a new episode.

If i was living on my own I would never pay R625 for a handful of channels.
