DStv - Your time is up

Sasfin Securities deputy chairman David Shapiro has dismissed calls from MultiChoice to impose stricter regulations on Netflix in South Africa.

Speaking on Business Day TV, Shapiro said Netflix is “simply progress”, and that after you have used Netflix, there is “no way that you are ever going to go back to DStv”.

Well that's not entirely true. If DStv offered a 1080p all-inclusive standalone streaming service at an acceptable price it would be a must-have service for most cord-cutters I think.

There will always be demand for sport and syndicated content not produced and hoarded by Netflix, Amazon, BBC, Disney etc. If DStv wants to remain relevant it should haul ass and provide that service in the streaming space.

never knew Simon had this side hustle, noice

So DStv will cost you R42 914 over 24 months while Netflix is a lot cheaper at R23 742.47.

However, if you don’t use Showmax you can remove the need for an internet connection from DStv and that brings the cost down to R23 546.

This article assumes the internet connection would solely be purchased for Netflix...that's dumb. Also Netflix recommends a 5Mbps connection for a 1080p stream (not the 10Mbps the article claims). They also use the UHD package for Netflix (to inflate the subscription cost?) when DSTV doesn't offer UHD yet.

While we might sound like DStv fan boys (we most certainly are not)

They had it right before the bit in brackets.

If dstv wants to survive they better hurry up with a proper streaming sports offer. That is their advantage and they need to use it...

Yah was about to say.. whether I streamed from Netflix or not I had an internet pipe. If you take that into consideration Netflix is the obviously cheaper.

I don’t get the whole DSTV complaint, you can’t compare an OTT player with an incumbent with broadcasting transmission systems.. it’s dumb. 2ndly Netflix only started producing content relatively recently compared with MultiChoice/DSTV.

In the end the ceo of DSTV comes across as a desperate idiot trying to maintain the status quo instead of using available opportunities to remove the premium aspect of their product and ‘win’ by mass adoption. But I guess that’s normal for entrenched monopolies when they face competition and refuse to adapt models.

Well it's an illegal alternative to DStv. If I was so inclined I'd probably use Nitro TV or NTV.mx over them.

Knowing DSTV, they will just try and ban Netflix and not fix their own problems. Hopefully they dnt have the power to do so.

They dropped the ball ages ago, have F-all to pass. They can die a slow death.

That would hardly be ideal. Supersport is pretty great, so a well-priced streaming service would be nice.

Dear DSTV:
I can assure you that regulating Netflix is not going to cause any of your previous customers to return.

Whether those remaining will abandon ship at a slower rate remains to be seen.

MultiChoice has been losing DStv Premium subscribers in recent years, and this loss has been attributed to [-]increased competition from Netflix[/-] ANN7/Gupta bribe and SABC scandal.
FTFY.

Lol, I’m not sure what to make of the fact that you even think it’s possible for DSTV to ban anything :)
