DStv - Your time is up

Lol, I’m not sure what to make of the fact that you even think it’s possible for DSTV to ban anything :)
Lol, I meant DStv will try and get Netflix banned through the powers that be that control broadcasting etc. Blah blah

Maybe like convincing the DOC to implement un-encrypted set-top boxes to protect their monopoly? That could NEVER be possible.

Oh... Wait.... That is exactly what they did. I wonder what the value of that bribe was?

They should have a seperate Box Office app (or embed it into the DSTV Now app) - because I think Box Office isn't too bad.

Legally, there seems to be no way to get the latest movies legitimately - even if you want to pay.

I always thought things on Box Office would be available on Google Play, but Box Office is even before them.

As a non subscriber (been DSTV Free for 10 years), I am slightly envious of their Box Office ...

Also find it interesting that you think the powers that be can achieve that...

Oh that part is simple:

Parliament passes act that requires all broadcasting systems (be it internet or normal tv) to have at least 50% local content (you know for diversity, multiculturalism and progress). Carriers of said content are obliged by the act to ban said content if it doesn't meed the government's requirements.

Both Youtube and Netflix would then effectively become illegal.

Oh I know the theory.. It's more the practice that I would see being impossible

The only thing that is keeping DSTV afloat at the moment is Supersport. If it wasn't for that, they'd just be a footnote in history. By holding onto Supersport with a death grip, they've got DSTV subscriber's by the short hairs.

If they let go of the grip on SuperSport, or sport in general , they WILL die!

Imagine streaming your sport using ESPN or something similar ~ ok now I want an alternative. Competition is good!

Look at ADSL, fibre, data prices, Apple vs. Samsung, etc.
At the end of the day the consumer wins.

Allow us to stream it, give us a fair price, and you may just survive.

ESPN+ does this already -if rugby is your thing, according to some forumites who have tested this, they (ESPN+) does Super Rugby and internationals. (I want to say Currie Cup as well, but I'm not 100% sure.)
Pretty sure cricket is covered there also, but again not 100%.

Well dstv is Satelite technology that limits you to only its services. It's more expensive to transmit via satellite, and there will have to be stricter regulations. Fiber, adsl, etc are fixed line services, that more and more consumers are moving towards. Netflix for under R200 a month, adsl & isp +- 600. You get more for your money, all users in the home get internet access and the free services like YouTube, vimeo etc, blow dstv out of the water, in terms of cost and what you get for adsl/fiber. Dstv need cheaper streaming only options to stay in the market. Especially for live sports, I'm willing to pay reasonable prices for such services from multichoice.

They used have a box office app, I think now it's only a website.

You can also try Black for movies, they seem to get them around the same time box office does

Yep, DSTV already has the capabilities of launching a streaming only service with DSTV Now, I don't see why it's even taking so long to launch the service.

Because they know they will haemorrhage money?

If you compare the price of a DStv Premium subscription versus Netfix and ShowMax, it is around 8 times more expensive. They will fight very hard to maintain this revenue for as long as possible.

This is the challenge of being disrupted. The new say is always cheaper and more efficient, and there is no easy way for a company to make the same money by migrating to the new business model.

DSTV could easily stem the loss tide and at the same time significantly increase its subscribers -- simply has to charge an affordable rate for its inferior service.

Naturally they won't, because like all ticks they'll hang on enjoying the rich blood flow until they're forcefully brushed off.

Multichoice your time is up

Multichoice has been having so many priveliges and monopolies, it is time they start losing. Not only have they been the blue-eyed boys of the government, but they have negotiated some laws to protect them.
One such law is, NO other satelite TV network is allowed to have a PVR or no DVR's are allowed to be imported into South Africa because Multichoice has the monopoly and is the ONLY people who are allowed to have a digital video recorder on the market. Even the Competition Commission cannot touch them. The Competition Commission target stupid things, but the biggest corruption are left to go on unhindered.
I agree, Multichoice , your time is up. Pack your bags, switch off your satelite and go. We don't want you anymore and we don't need you anymore.

So DStv will cost you R42 914 over 24 months while Netflix is a lot cheaper at R23 742.47.

However, if you don’t use Showmax you can remove the need for an internet connection from DStv and that brings the cost down to R23 546.

And how many HD football, rugby, tennis golf matches or F1, World Class cycling races have you watched on Netflix? Your comparison isn't one at all.

I didn't watch those when I had DSTV. Besides, there are other streaming services you can tack on for a nominal fee if that's what floats your boat.
