Agreed, my late father was Scottish but I was born and bred in SA. I have a British passport but only SA id book, no SA passport...

i've luckily got 2 also....and the eu one is about to come in very handy.
any other pora's on this thread that might have info on whether my wife can get citizenship through me, i've been reading many conflicting sources on the net around this issue and the people at the consulate come with a different story every month.

Are you suggesting that there should be no individual countries, or that people should be able to move freely between countries?

Anybody living in SA with kids and without a get out of jail card is asking for trouble.
I had no foreign passport, hence i came to NZ to get permanent residence here and in turn get my NZ citizenship. Once I have that I will keep my SA passport for the fun of it, will be good for a nice laugh every now and again.

Personally, agree with you, but then I am one of the few who actually do enjoy and love this country, faults and all.
However it became fashionable back in the days of conscription to have dual citizenship, basically it became fashionable to be a draft dodger.
I served with a number of guys who were from other countries, and who decided to join up, and "do their bit", and they still have their original citizenship.
So we went from one racialy motivated gauvament to another racialy motivated gauavament, from pro-white to pro-black, it is to be expected, you either adjust or you dont survive.
What i often wonder about, is those who have dual citizenship, and are of a military age, if their second country had to re-introduce conscription, due to some emergency how many would suddenly be "South African".
Although 2 of my friends, 1 Swedish, and the other Finnish had to do military service in those countries to retain their citizenship.
Now that to me is a good thing, you want to hold the passport, then earn the right, by doing 1 or 2 years service in that country, either military or otherwise (community etc).

On the subject of travelling on foreign passports can anyone tell me if I will pick up any problems leaving SA on a British passport with a one way ticket to the UK. I have dual citizenship but no SA passport.

It depends, legally if you entered SA on your British passport you will have to leave on it.
Same goes if you are the holder of more than one passport and you are a south African citizen, you are not allowed to enter SA on your foreign passport.

@MacNabs My question may have been worded a bit strangely, what I am asking is can I leave SA on a british passport that has no entry stamps showing my arrival in SA taking into account the fact that I have no SA passport?

Well I am guessing, you have no arrival stamps in your passport because you now have a new passport? And the old (old) one had the arrival stamps?
Othewise how did you enter SA? Beit bridge with a couple of pounds in your back pocket?

I care not either way. Just pointing out that not having a passport doesn't make you "not a citizen"

Bottom line, passports are unfortunately required in this modern world - too late to turn back now - so the more you can get your grubby little mits on, the better and kudos to you.

There is nothing wrong with having a dual citizenship or two passports if you are indeed fully committed to South Africa and will stay here. Whats wrong with having a euro passport even if its only for the purpose of easy travelling in and out of other countries.
