Switching off your cellphone is a good idea when you're attending an important business meeting, watching a movie, and certainly when you're reporting it stolen at a police station.
In the world of dumb crooks, 2008 seems to have already started with a bang.
Gauteng police issued a press statement on Monday titled "Dumbest criminal?" - a fitting description for a man whose "stolen" cellphone rang while he was busy opening a case at a police station.
The 25-year-old was promptly arrested and appeared in court yesterday on charges of per- jury and defeating the ends of justice.
On Saturday, the man walked into Mamelodi East police station to report that he had been attacked by a gang of robbers.
While opening the case, the man was interviewed by a detective and described how the ruthless robbers held him at gunpoint. There were a number of attackers and they stole only the phone, he explained.
At the end of the interview, in which the man gave a statement under oath, the detective picked up his phone and dialled the stolen phone. Suddenly, the victim's pocket sprung to life.
"The shock left him speechless for a few minutes," said police spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman.
"The suspect didn't want to give an explanation as to why he had falsely reported the robbery," he added.
Probably wanted to sell it and hit his insurance for a new phone
