Durban Harbour Fire

What was the cause?

Probably negligence or inability from someone.

There was some moderate rain this arvie in the south that was headed that way, so it must've helped a bit.
When I left the office though the smoke was still billowing out of the area though.

It rained a little, but stopped. Smoke still coming out heavily as I am typing this. I think it may burn another 2 days at minimum.

By the sounds, and definitely the looks of it, firefighters are not able to put out the fire. In my opinion they are working on containing it to the factory alone.

My fear for Durban now is winds. If the wind changes direction now and smoke is blown downwards into the city, I suspect all hell to break loose. Radio stations already started interviewing people who gave advise that people should, in this case, immediately go indoors - close all windows, doors, close up air vents, switch off aircons, etc. The municipality already started dishing same instructions out to complexes here in Point late this afternoon.

Wind will come from the south for most of Sat, looking at winguru and windy its predicted to start swinging early hours of Sunday to a NE for the day.
So predominantly it will be pushing from the S tomorrow, same as today, if you can believe the weatherman/dolly that is ;)

Residents near Transnet fire urged to evacuate

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/residents-near-transnet-fire-urged-to-evacuate-20170324

Durban – Residents and businesses near the burning Transnet warehouse in Rossburgh have been urged to evacuate, paramedics said on Friday.

There was a threat the fire might spread, Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said.

The M4, South Coast road, and the M7 in the area had been closed to traffic.

In a statement, the Ethekwini municipality said the warehouse contained large amounts of wax and plastic.

A worker at the warehouse and a firefighter were injured in the blaze and rushed to hospital.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Seems the effort to contain the fire has not been entirely successful yet and there is a risk that the fire could spread to a warehouse next door that cobtains ammonia nitrite fertiliser.... If that happens the brown sticky stuff will destroy the fan

Anyone with half a brain would be fork lifting that crap out of the warehouse and taking it elsewhere like a mofo right now and all through the night.

My dad was in this warehouse recently [the one burning]. Says it's not just wax that is a small part of what they have in there. It is literally filled with millions of tons of misc cargo. I did not know this but it used to be leased by PEP Stores.

Fck me. I hope everyone is okey and evacuated before that ammonia nitrate warehouse gets hit.

Unconfirmed but I'm hearing rumours that they are beginning to evacuate all within a 4km radius

Bad choices would be made, like the fire at Engine when working there, it burned for some time, if only they heeded the warnings and advice from the section engineer that said try and drain the oil store tank as quick as possible when the fire started, would have been a lot less damage

Nope. Anyone with half a brain would focus on containing the fire & preventing it from getting to the petrol stations & fuel depots.

The insurance companies can sort out the shtshow as to who's Hello Kitty merch burned down later.
