Hi guys/gals. First post :)

Just saw this thread and wondered if the Durban WUG was up and running yet? I'm in Glenwood, if it makes any difference.

Is the Durban WUG still active and growing? I'm in Assagay area and want to know if there's anyone in this area I can connect to.

www.jawug.org.za is the website for the Johannesburg network.
Their coverage is pretty good, so follow the getting started guide to find out.
Yes, its legal.

Where abouts are you in Assagay? Go along to the website: www.dwc.za.net and contact someone from there to see if you have LOS to any existing high sites. We are busy in the process of finalising a back bone link from Durban to Hillcrest (Should be live this week hopefully)

You need something super simple and automated. Imagine a usb 802.11b/g/n wireless adapter with a small memory capacity containing install software like you get with the 3G usb modems. Then people all over the place just plug in the usb wireless device and it installs drivers if neccessary and a software app which configures it and helps maintain the mesh link. This way the mesh coverage could be grown rapidly and if someone/group sets up a gateway with proxy/caching/mirroring to the internet then everyone will be sorted for a small monthly fee. Maybe I should keep dreaming as a system like this would take control away from the corporates...

Just gave my neighborhood wi-fi network a go

Funny enough to see the ISP reading as Telkom. The cost was like R2/mb with-in a 15min period...yeah that was R10 for a speedtest and some webpages delightful

Is there a plan on ever updating the DWC Website?

http://www.dwc.za.net/website/news.html

Last updated 4 years ago, and the forum link has 404'd for as long as I remember. This creates a rather terrible impression for people who are looking to join (And judging by the amount of "planning" people in a 10km radius around my area, is A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
