So I am new to posting here. I have been following some threads for a while since I am looking to purchase a plasma or LCD. The main use would be to watch DSTV and series directly from my HDD as well as the odd DVD.

What I have gained from this forum is that Samsung is probably the best option for both Plasma and LCD, just pricing concerns really come into play. I have a budget of R5000 and I don’t really want to extend it much further than that. The Samsung LA32C530 (full HD) seems to best fit my requirements – as it can play different file types from HDD. The Samsung plasmas (C430) don’t offer HDD support according to the saleman at the Samsung shop in Canal Walk.

Now that I seem to have found my LCD to fit my requirements and budget, I read the following on the internet today:

http://www.techcentral.co.za/cabinet-chooses-t2-for-digital-tv/20059/
“It’s official! SA will adopt the European standard for digital terrestrial television, TechCentral can reveal exclusively. Furthermore, the country will implement the second generation of the standard, known as DVB-T2. Cabinet has endorsed a recommendation by a Southern African Development Community (SADC) task team that the region adopt DVB-T2.”

How does this announcement regarding DVB-T2 affect my requirements for purchasing a new TV? Does the TV need to be somehow compatible with this DVB-T2?
From Samsung’s website, regarding the LA32C530:
System DTV Reception (DVB-T/T2/C/S2) No

Or would this signal arrive via a DSTV decoder, and should I wait before purchasing a new DSTV decoder in this format? I currently have an older single view SD PVR, and will be upgrading to a new HD PVR 2 in the near future.

Actually, Samsung is not the best option when looking at LCD televisions. I've seen the Sony 32EX400 for around R5000. If you are going to use the set to mostly watch DSTV you don't really need to worry. The television will just not be able to receive the digital channels if you plug an aerial directly into it.

But apparently Sony doesnt have backup service in South Africa - could be a problem if TV becomes faulty, whereas Samsung do have capabilities locally.
I also dont think that the Sony EX400 can play directly from HDD, and dont support as many file formats as the Samsung???

Thanks McGuywer,
So I can buy a TV now without worrying about the DVB-T2 issue....
And I should wait to buy a new decoder which could come out at a later stage compatible to DVB-T2?????

Yes, the signal would arrive via your DSTV decoder.

dude what k@k are you talking :erm:

that is totally wrong.....

are you ignorant are just leading ppl astray on purpose!!

edit : going into a meeting now, I pray that when I get back someone has spoken some sense to Amino. Both regarding how the DVB-T2 signal will be received and why NOT to buy a TV for its media playing abilities (which in this case happens to be a LCD)

ai...

I never meant that the DStv decoder could receive the DVB signal...
If he has DStv, DVB would not matter to him? Or explain to me how it would affect him?

@ Amino

before I get to the DTV bit, I wanna ask you about the TV you getting...

You decided to go with the LCD because its got functionality to play movies via a USB stick?

For R5700 you can have a 10" bigger PS42C430/1 plasma that will obliterate 32" 5 Series/EX400 series at SD TV and SD series. And sport, if the need ever arose.

Just save up and buy a WD TV for around R900, boom, plays everything off your HDD.

ya thats what I was getting to... but the OP seems to be AFK :erm:

just seems silly to buy a TV for that kind of reason. Rather get a TV that is gonna be better suited to what you need and just get a media player to play all your content

:)

@HTC

For my budget (R5000) I think the LA32C530 is best value for money. I do have series on HDD which I can plug & play direct into this unit (without a multi-media player). The PS40C430 does not support the different video file formats.

Im not biased in either way towards LCD or Plasma, I would take either. It must fit within budget and be able to play from HDD.

We have your to-be tasks in our best interests. It really is in your best interests to save a little and get plasma, along with a HD media player. Hell, you should even be able to find a second-hand one for R500 or less. And it'll be a helluva lot better than the LA32C530's USB port.

Please, pretty please, save to R6500?! :)

The 10" extra size is worth more than R1500 over your R5000 budget.

Ugh. If you really won't budge, the LA32C430 will have to do. :(

when you say HDD you talking High Definition series or what? ie. 720p ???

ok wait I see what you saying now, you got all your series stored on your HDD and you gonna copy them onto USB and play right off there?

This is the reason you going for this TV?

Samsung 5 Series USB ports can play video files from flash drives/external HDDs, where Samsung 4 Series plasmas can't.

Seriously though, he will surely want a HD media player at a later stage.

External Hard Drive
If I can find a TV that supports mutiple movie formats, why should I then buy a mutlimedia player? Doesnt make sense.
TV budget is R5000, because in a few months time I want to upgrade to HD PVR 2.

What about the DVB-T2 issue? Does the TV need to be DVB-T2 compatible, or the PVR?

ya thats what Im getting at... as soon as you get this kind of TV you eventually gonna find someone who can source you 720p tv series and then your TV's USB port is useless... (none play MKV's)

then he's really gonna kick himself for not paying R700 extra for another 10 inches

Ive just gone through the whole process so ya...

:)

Because a media player guarantees you that you will be able to play like every file type. Doubt the USB port will play every file type.

Anyway, budget is budget. If you simply cannot increase it in lieu of the facts that plasma suits your tasks better, then so be it.

Seriously though, rather save another month, or postpone your HD PVR by a month to allow for the plasma. You will not be sorry. The extra 10" goes a long, long way. Besides the superior picture quality you will be getting.

DVB-T2 is totally unrelated to DSTV. Its basically a means to pick a TV channel over-the-air (like SABC) except the signal is not analogue, its digital.

Once this eventually is rolled out you gonna need a set-top-box anyhoo.... so all the ppl that have bought TV's with DVB-T tuners are useless...... Dont worry about the DTV goodies at the moment. Everyone is gonna need a set-top-box eventually
