Hey guys, sorry about making another thread, I bet it's getting annoying...
anyways, as most of you are aware, I'm currently in school, and since I'm in matric I've been voted as head of year book... now I'm trying to go a different route this year as I'm planing on making a dvd year book... So this is where your help comes into play as i need to find a program which can convert Video's made in Windows Movie Maker to dvd format(so that they can be viewed via a regular dvd player). Now, my idea is that I make a video called for example "grade 8" and then that is on the menu of the dvd, so that views can just select the grade they want and a 10 min video of the year plays.

I'm looking at about R500-R700, free would be nice, but there will be fund raising for this.

Much appreciated

Scotty,

if you're running Vista it comes with pretty decent built-in tools for this... Movie Maker will convert photo's into slide shows with pretty nice transitions and DVD Maker creates some awesome menu's

Not too sure...
I'm running Vista Ultimate.

I'm sure a Google search could help

How does DVD Styler grab your hiney?

Blurb:
The main DVDStyler features are:
  • creation a DVD video with interactive menus
  • support of AVI, MPEG and other file formats
  • support of MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, MP2, MP3, AC-3 and other audio and video formats
  • using MPEG and VOB files without reencoding, see FAQ
  • allows put files with different audio/video format on one DVD (support of titleset)
  • user-friendly interface with support of drag & drop
  • flexible menu creation on the basis of scalable vector graphic
  • import of image file for background
  • placing of buttons, text, images and other graphic objects anywhere on the menu screen
  • changing the font/color and other parameters of buttons and graphic object
  • scaling of buttons and graphic objects
  • coping of any menu object or whole menu
  • dvd scripting
Also, some GOOG action ..which reminded me of DVD Flick:
DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks, subtitles as well as a menu for easier navigation.

Features
  • Burn near any video file to DVD
  • Support for over 45 file formats
  • Support for over 60 video codecs
  • Support for over 40 audio codecs
  • Easily add a menu
  • Add your own subtitles
  • Easy to use interface
  • Burn your project to disc after encoding
  • Completely free without any adware, spyware or limitations
That should be enough for y'all to go on and, being as it's FLOSS, you can send copies to all and sundry, including next year's [-]victims-to-real-life[/-] ... "matriculants!" :D

edit: did you bother to check Gary's free software thread before asking here, hhmmm? :p

VSO Software's ConvertXtoDVD 3 works for me - I make my own templates in a graphics program (Photoshop), then create the titles and sound for each menu page.

This is the only solid program I've used recently that is not commercial bloatware... and it seems to convert any type of video file to DVD!

Current price is US$49.99

I would use Roxio EZ Media Creator. You can either buy it off the net or find it at Incredible Deception.

Scotty,

R500-700 would get you Nero Ultimate. You can capture video clips from camcorder and encode them to MPEG2, make easy edits and create DVDs with menus - with this suite of programs.
I believe a free trial version is available, it may be limited though.
Download trial or buy it at, or at a local store or SA online store.
http://www.nero.com/

If you're looking at a video slideshow instead, there is ProShow Gold from Photodex. It converts JPEG (or other) images into a visual slideshow with impressive transitions, effects and titles. You can also lay a soundtrack and decide where it starts and stops, change volume etc, lay a voice over etc.
ProShow Gold is available as a 30day trial and isn't a huge download.
ProShow Gold can also use VIDEO FILES intermingled with the pictures so you could also use it to make an ordinary DVD that way.
Download trial or buy it at:
http://www.photodex.com/products/proshowgold/

There is also a range of SONY VEGAS suites available in places like Incredible Connection.
You can do quite advanced editing and effects as well as DVD creation, Sony Vegas is however
more expensive but is semi-professional.

For open source applications which can do these things, eg the powerful converter MPEGStreamClip (also used by professionals) you can find lots of info and a huge database of programs and download links at Baldrick's site: www.videohelp.com

There is also www.doom9.org but IMO VideoHelp is has more apps and friendly members to ask technical questions.

List of apps:

Vista Home Premium and Ultimate:D

No don't sell him Vista. Vista's built in tools don't approach the power of discrete programs which run just fine under XP. It's also possible to do all of this with FREE Open Source programs. VideoHelp is your friend.
