Almost everyone I speak to who wants to copy their dvd's for backup, media centres or just plain piracy uses this application.

It was ' ruled illegal' years ago, has not been updated since , but still works perfectly.

Why have the dvd producers not worked out a way to make it not work?

Don't get me wrong - I love the app. I'm just curious as to why it's unstoppable.

They can't change the protection because then the DVDs are not playable on existing DVD players.

ETA: Someone here did mention that there are some DVDs that are not decryptable with it though.

CSS encryption is a fixed format, you can't change it because all the DVD players out there will no longer work. I don't think it has been ruled illegal BTW.

Some DVDs with Sony ARcoSS protection you will not be able to copy with DVD Decrypter. For those you need something newer like DVD43 or RipIt4Me.

DVDDecryptor ftw! I love the app. Very rarely you encounter a dvd it cannot rip. DVD Shrink is also quite nice.

It is illegal in the USA according to the provisions of the DMCA, whereby it is illegal to bypass legitimate copyright restrictions and software measures. It is not illegal in the rest of the world.

This is how I go about backing up my DVDs...

1) To make a backup of a DVD to another DVD...
Install this program first... it will remove the copy protection and macrovision while you decrypt...
http://www.dvd43.com/
When you have that installed, then use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your hard drive...
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/
Once you have it ripped to your hard drive, use DVD shrink to make the image smaller and turn it into an ISO file that I can fit onto one DVD... Note: you have to select ISO image as the target file from the drop down menu.
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
Once you have the ISO image you can use this program to burn it back to a DVD...
http://www.imgburn.com/

2) To Rip a DVD to an AVI file...
The free version of this program can rip any DVD to a 700 Mb AVI (XVid) File...

3) To turn video files back into a DVD...

I have come across only a few that will not work with DVD decrypter.... but then usually Fair Use Wizard will still rip them to my MVix Player.

Correct. Casino Royale doesn't decrypt. There are a few apps that will, but I don't wanna name them - obvious reasons.

I've come across maybe three DVD's in the last year that Decrypter cannot rip - The Proposition was one.

I used DVD Fab Platinum for those.

For Mvix I prefer converting to Divx - no compression, and I end up with a +- 1.5 Gig file in full quality.

Garyvdh - why do use the program mentioned as step 1 - does DVD Decryptor not do the same ?

Well in the old days, the best bet was to re-flash your DVD-ROM drive so that region protection was completely removed.... then the manufacturers got wise to that and started making their ROMs harder to hack. So we all had to start using programs like DeCSS and Regions free or Slysoft's AnyDVD so that we could all watch our Region 1 Discs on our computers. Then along came DVD43 which does the same for free. So I just have it installed on my computers and think it is wise for others to have the same capability. I think DVD Decrypter does the same... but it is just nice to have DVD43 running there all the time. And I think that some of those discs that have a problem with DVD Decrypter might just rip with DVD43 installed... so rather than type all of that out... I just tell ppl to install it. ;)

Sounds good - will give it a try.

I presume FairUseWizard is lossy ? - which is why I use Dr Divx.

What does that mean? you mean a lossless codec? I think it encodes to XVid by default. I used the free version for a while... a one-click solution to rip to a 700 Mb AVI file... very very good quality... very watchable.. even with widescreen long length movies!

Then I registered and now use the full version of Fair Use Wizard... I have not found an easier to use program.. .whether you use it on the one click settings... or whether you do batch conversions... it just works... usually straight from the DVD itself. I use the full version to rip longer movies to 1,4 Gb.

I have not used Dr. Divx... but I really suggest you give Fair Use Wizard a shot... it is a gem of a program!

afaik there is only one dvd that i could not backup...this was the documentry called secrets.
I like using DVD Decrypter and shrink, they are so good together like a marriage in its first year..lol.

pity for daemon that wont work on ultimate

Getting FairUse as we speak - but why is this app available and not DVD Decryptor?

Just curious.

Because DVD Decrypter has been around for a lot longer... and it was the first and only target of the Movie Studios at that stage... .I guess they gave up after a while and realised that they cannot win this war... ppl will always find a way to crack any kind of encryption. When they got DVD Decrypter banned in the USA... it just moved offshore... and the piracy went on.

DVD decrypter can't properly handle some of the newer copy protection schemes, especially on Sony releases. You'll find that it will appear to decrypt properly, but when you attempt play back, you will have issues.

Actually, the big advantage of DVD43 is the fact that it decrypts on the fly, which saves massive amounts of time. If you use DVD43, there's really no need to use DVDdecrypter to rip to the hard-drive first. You can open up the DVD directly with DVDshrink, and recode immediately... skipping the rip process ;)

They have and there are many discs that cannot be read by dvddecrypter alone. I'm not sure why they targeted dvddecrypter, but not any of the other tools that can handle their updated measures. Maybe the developer was an easy target.
