DVD writeer Brands

+1 for Sony and Samsung

An extra +1 for Sony though.

It's actually worth sticking to the recognised brands such as those mentioned, Pioneer, Sony, Samsung. I would stay away from rebranded drives from Asus, Gigabyte etc.

Plextor is very good - but expensive! So is Pioneer!

I've used Asus drives - not impressed at all!, Sony is okay, Samsung... i've only seen broken ones i've swapped out with LG!

lite-on is rebranded Sony!, have had MANY issues with those. AOPEN drives i won't recommend to my worst enemy!

I've had 2 couple month old Samsungs die on me in the past month. Not a fan of Sony or Liteon (had driver issues before) ... only one I've never had a problem with is LG

This would be interesting, could we have a poll with all the different drives pls!

My 2nd-hand / salvaged-from-old-pc's optical drive collection sometimes fills 2 boxes. Every time I want to throw a pc together for whatever, and I throw a Lite-on drive in, it just doesn't work. If I'm salvaging pc parts and see a Lite-on optical drive, I leave it in the case when I toss the thing to the recyclers. I think Lite-ons also masquerade as Aopens. Junk. LG's seem to go on forever. Samsungs: +/- 25% failure rate in my experience.
