DVD writeer Brands

I've had major issues with Samsungs drives over the past 6 months, in fact im on my 3rd :/ previously I had an ASUS that I used for 3 years without any problems, guess they dont make them like they used to. Personally I'm waiting for Blu-Ray drives to break the R1000 mark :D

Try taking that disc to another person's PC and insert it into their optical drive and see if you can copy the contents of your disc to theirs. I've seen it fail many times with a "cyclic redundancy error". I've had older Samsungs before, which were bad, but these WriteMasters, I've had them for years now and they are awesome.

Hmm. I have had this once or twice:o

What is the best way to get the info off a disk that gives this error? Generic/other drive? Software that'll read disk multiple times to get info? Or am I stuffed?

Is it the LG drive itself that causes this, or is it burning too fast? Or what? I have lots of stuff stored on DVD that I will need to access later- if I can't I'll cry:(

Agreed the LGs can be loud- next drive I'll look for a gentle swoosh:)

Plextor should be available from IntelliStor.
Can also try Maxtec as they were a distributor at one stage.

Will do, thanks. But strange that not one local online shop stocks them hey? I'm doubting they get brought in locally, but will try the above.

Best dvd drive brand imo would be LG ! I bought an LG (ide) writer in late 2006 (Pre litescribe model)and it is still working perfectly considering i burn alot of discs on a daily basis with that drive. LG is the best IMO

+1 for Plextor too - very good drives, possibly the best there is.

IntelliStor in Halfway House JHB used to stock them, but not sure about now.

I will contact Plextor EMEA and aks them about local distributors then.

Plextor, always have always will, got mine through www.newegg.com

+1

mine is 5 years old and still going strong (at work)
have a benq 1650 3 years old, liteon 20A1L , 1 year old. (at home)
benq still better than liteon although only 16x speed.

btw plextor was bought on ebay. newer ones too expensive and the chipsets have been farmed out to other manufacturers so not sure how good they are now.

I bought a DVD writer in 2004 and it still works well = Fujitsu-Siemens = NEC.

When in doubt buy a Japanese brand folks. Remember No 2 economy in the world, some of the highest quality standards are in Japan. USA is No 1 economy but they don't make DVD writers, neither do the Germans. When in doubt buy Japanese and the best versions are JP domestic market drives.

Pioneer
Fujitsu
Fujitsu-Siemens (NEC)
NEC
Sony (NEC)
Panasonic
Mitsumi
etc

Pioneer is another drive that gets the thumbs up from online sites.

Its strange that my last 4 dvd writers have lasted 13m and then all of a sudden can't read dvds etc. Both samsung and lg. Reckon they're as bad as each other..

so what do YOU use?

/sorry if i missed it, just too tired to read all the other posts

Samsung and lite-on .

Had a BenQ , very noisy (sound like an airoplane going up ) , LG does not work for long maybe 5 months and Aopen just stops working after a while .

Had my drives for 6 years now and no problems so far .
