DVD writeer Brands

A poll maybe?

From my experience, stay far away from LG. The new Samsung drives (WriteMaster) are very good. Sony and BenQ are the other two that gets my vote.

Can we add to this the DVD type? +/- (does it make a difference) brand and @ which write speed?

Just not Samsung. Never seen one that works after more than 2 years.

How many DVDs are you burning? I have done about 200 on my LG LightScribe (IIRC). Still seems OK. Speeds on that is usually 16x, and using Verbatim DVD+R discs.

Where do you get Pioneer / Plextor drives... I dont see them on the usual reseller pricelists... Rectron / Axiz / Frontosa... I am sick of the LG / Samsung R299 burners myself.

samsung,

never lg, they suck, see how many have problems with them, stop working shortly after being bought

i've had a writemaster fail on me in the very same week i bought it!

Never had an LG drive that's failed on me though

I get +/- 1000 burns from any brand except ben-Q where I managed almost 2000 writes once. Over the last 20 years I've probably been thru around 10/12 writers

Commercial writable optical media CD-RW has only been around since the mid-90's - what were you using 20 years ago? The CD-MO writable media was available from 1988, but not a commercial release. Just curious... ;)

I used to use Samsung drives, but had too many failures. LG are notorious for optical drive failures. BenQ may have improved, but I wouldn't touch them - they had too many compatibility issues with some boards/chipsets.
I've been using Sony for the past 5-or-so years and no problems so far - currently have 6 writers on my PC's, with th orogonal one I bought still working great! I average about 30-45 CD/DVD burns per month, and my current writer has just gone 2 years old...

Try taking that disc to another person's PC and insert it into their optical drive and see if you can copy the contents of your disc to theirs. I've seen it fail many times with a "cyclic redundancy error". I've had older Samsungs before, which were bad, but these WriteMasters, I've had them for years now and they are awesome.

Discs I've recorded my ASUS SATA drives sometimes will not read after a few months or years. put those discs into LG drives and they're fine!

... can someone pls put up a poll for us?

It seems to me it's just the luck off the draw. I used to swear by LG, but after having 3 drives fail on me the last year, i switched to LiteOn and haven't looked back since.

I've only ever had problems with LG drives, mainly read issues. A friend of mine has the exact same problems. I couldn't even install Far Cry 2 today because my drive won't read the disc and had to install it over the network using my brothers generic DVD drive. LG drives are also incessantly loud and spin up unnecessarily. I'm going Samsung when I replace this drive.

This is my second LG drive BTW.
