What benefit will you get from a dx 11 gpu viz dx 10 are there any games or programs that utilizes this already or is it mainly to future proof and how long before DX 11 is fully utilized by developers of pc games?
Acording to Mybroadband newsletter of the 15th DX 10 was a fiasco and what guarantees are there that DX 11 will be any better.

But has DX 10 and DX 11 not got anything to do with the quality of the graphics rather than the speed?

hmmm, well DX11 seems to mainly have nice features like tessellation and HDR compression, which makes like as a gamer far more worth while.

Tessellation basically means you can make a very very detailed environment, without chocking up your graphics cards memory and shaders.

HDR compression makes for more immense light.

Everything else just makes the processors more able to run programs on them and such.

Well really you wont see a massive quality jump as the main goal of the update was for other things such as increased general processing abilities and speed boosts. Although there are new features like tessellation etc. If your patient (unlike me) I would say wait for it to mature.

DX10 wasn't utilized much in games because you need to have Windows Vista whilst most people stuck with DX9 WinXP. There will be many more people upgrading to DX11 Win7 compared to Win Vista because Win Vista was too bloated and Win7 is less of a resource hog. So DX11 game development should be a lot better than DX10.

Like you i am also impatient, first i waited to see if the prices of hardware would come down seeing the seeing the Rand had strengthened against the Dollar by+- 12% and the hardware is imported so theoretically the prices should have come down but it did not.
Secondly the the article in the Mybroadband newsletter makes you wonder if one must really wait and if the difference would be so very noticeable to necessitate spending about R1000 more for a DX11 card.

Yes, but how long do you keep the same graphics card? There might only be a few dx11 games out in the next few months, but by next year this time we'll have plenty and you'll be stuck with a dx10.1 graphics card.

there will be a few games that will be designed for DX 11 but development does not surely not happen in a couple of months, it can take more than eighteen month to develop but i am sure games are developed for the majority, and surely it will be a minority who owns DX 11 cards, and it would i presume take a while before such games become freely available because the demand would not be so great and would affect their turnover negatively and would not be profitable.

There are already 2/3 DX11 titles IIRC. Of course they looks veeery similar to dx10 but there seems to be more "enthusiasm" for dx11 from the start:)

I do agree with you but what i really want to find out is if the difference is very noticeable to us laymen, and what i did have a look at is on most of the games that i have it states on the covers that they are DX 9 compatible.

What i forgot to mention is that after reading in the newsletter about the DX 10 fiasco, should one not wait and see the tests of the dx 11 before rushing to buy a Dx 11 card which cost at least R1000 more and then finding out like DX 10 that it does not work and then they bring out a DX11.1 and then you again you need another GPU?

The Dx11 cards that are out atm are great value for money. Its not like they are R1000 more expensive just because they have dx11 capabilities, they whip ass. However, if you cannot afford a dx11 card atm then just go for one of the cheaper dx10.1 cousins:p (ie. 4890-R2000 : 4870-R1600 4850-R1000ish)

There are always alternatives :)

There was nothing wrong with DX10. I'm not sure why we can't separate the API from the Operating system :( Vista uptake was not great, but that has nothing to do with the API (DX10) at all.
what we must understand is that DirectX is a tool nothing more or less. What developers do with it is entirely up to them. Only now in 2009/early 2010 is it safe to assume that every VGA card has DirectX9.0c capability, (SM3.0 etc..) but that's almost 6 years after the first DX9.0c card came out (NV40/GF6)
I can put money on it but there will be no game that has DX10 GPU as a minimum requirement well into 2011 possibly. That's because you can closer target DX11 and DX10 hardware than you can DX9 and DX11 hardware. the differences are too vast.

The tools as well associated with developing a game that takes advantage of the latest API are also fewer right now. The in house programming ability of the developers is not as it is with doing work centred around DX9 hardware.

either way if you can afford DX11 hardware right now, buy it. No point in investing in DX10.X stuff (provided you're not sacrificing performance).I for one like the 5870

You guys do realize that games get mostly sold on graphics. The average person doesn't know anything about directx yet they will buy crysis even though they have a 7600.

Point i'm making is games will use directx11 because it makes marketing easier.

I remember a time when a directX would come out, you install it and boom! new DirectX.

now it's bladdy linked to Operationg systems (You have XP, so you can't have Dx10!) and to 3DCards (You only have a GTX295 SLI setup, so no DX10.1 for you either!)

wtf? is this all just some money making scheme by locking the technologies?

Keeper, DirectX has has alwasy been linked to graphics cards. In fact it exists for nothing else really (at least D3D component). There was never a time when you just installed and got a new DirectX and your hardware was automatically compatible.
from DX6.x to DX7 you needed a DX7 vga card to benefit from T&L engine.
DX7 to DX8.x you needed a pixel and vertex shader 1.x card to benefit from installing DX8 etc... DX10 was tied to Vista,, because XP's driver model simply can't do it. It's very old, and came around long before truly programmable GPUs were around. Had to be let go for progress to be made
