Ok firstly... I am not too clued up on networking or the lingo but i will try to explain my problem as best as i can.

I have an Android Tablet and a laptop running XP. Tablet has internet connection but i do not want to use it and the laptop doesnt. I do not have a router either.

Basically i linked the tablet to the laptop via wifi tethering. I use it for file sharing and VLC streaming which works fine. Today i tried remote desktop software so that i can control the laptop from my tablet over wifi. It works fine.

Now heres the problem. I create the wifi hotspot when i need it only. The remote desktop software on my tablet requires an ip address to work. The problem is this changes each time i create and disconnect a network.

Is there anyway to lock the ip address? I searched and found out that dns settings will help but that requires the laptop to have internet access which i am trying to avoid.

Anyone knows how to do it?

You should be able to just enter the PC name instead of an IP address and it should resolve fine.
However if it doesnt allow you to enter the pc name, then just get the latest IP address that your laptop has been assigned from the tablet wifi tethering. Should be able to get it by double left clicking the network icon on the bottom right of your screen and clicking on the support tab.
Then manually enter those settings under the properties button on the previous general tab - Select TCP/IP v4 and say properties. If you dont want internet then leave the DNS settings blank.
Im rusty on XP so just google how to manually enter IP address on XP.

Looking for this?

Hi There,
You would need to look at your wifi tethering program to see if it has the capability of saving a fixed IP address. I use it frequently but have it set with DHCP but I can set a starting range for the IP address. Yoou could then use that adddress on the PC as the address and set it fixed using the info from Rickster above.

Regards

Tim
