E-tags cannot be cloned? Really?

good question, never thought about that situation - similar to a biker that forgets his tag at home....

Why don't you email Sanral and ask them [email protected]
I bet you will get a ref no and target date, but sadly never an answer - they must be too busy not selling e-tags

Another question ... do the gantries read the numberplates from the front? ... Motorbikes dont have plates on the front.

they read for a tag and snap photo of front and rear

Snap a photo? Are you sure about that?

yeah!

"Open Road Tolling – This is another form of Electronic Toll Collection whereby the motorist is not required to stop at a toll booth or plaza to pay toll fees. Overhead Gantries are positioned along the toll route and technology mounted on these gantries will take photos of the front and rear of the vehicle and read the transponder (e-tag) in the vehicle – if there is no e-tag in the vehicle, it is identified using the photos that are taken of the front and rear of the vehicle."

Well, they have HD video camera's in there, so I suppose they could take a single frame from the stream. It's not like a speedtrap though.

that's interesting! do you know at what frame rate they record?

All I know about said system is that they are able to pick up your plates up to 210km/h.... so it's obviously going to have to be pretty good.

the Mifare systems also had one
Wrong, the mifare is a proprietary crypto, it was simple and easy to break.
I develop mifare systems, recently designed a nice reader for the city of cape town.

wait!!! I just had a thought forgive me if this was talked about already,

but if they taking photos of every car that passes thru a gantry whats the point of the e-tags?
if they have your number plates already so... you should be identifiable and can bill you based on that?

the e-tag is there so they don't have to bill you and can easily just take your money

There we go... I just have to drive at 215km/h

The Point of the eTag is to get money out of South Africa. Whether its the supply of the tags or operational costs. Its harder to track kickbacks in Swiss bank accounts.

The original aim was due to number plate cloning.... the tag was a 100% fool-proof method to identify the car, but it was expanded for FUD reasons.

The only time they will ever look at the number plate is when you contest that you went through the gantry... you cannot possibly tell me that every numberplate/tag is matched in real-time.

if that is the case, one could get a bike e-tag and use it for a car or truck

I can't imagine its difficult to clone - especially if it was implemented by our 'efficient gov't. It probably has more holes in it that Swiss cheese!

The entire system was developed by the investors, being that Austrian company.
