E-toll disaster even bigger than initially thought

That 60% discount is not available. Article should be researched more thoroughly, perhaps call the VPC even.

Knowing this governments logic , they will roll out Etolls in other areas to try and make up for the shortfall

I think it is good that the news outlets remind people of the promises that were made. I think even the people that were going to pay, will wait for the 60% discount to come into effect. So they will probably never pay...

That's not how it works. Government runs on tax money. So no matter what happens (pay etolls or pay to scrap project and clear debt), it's always tax payers that pay.

I think it's worth the short-term hit to avoid being milked for life. Also the knock-on effect with regards to delaying \ cancelling any other user-pays (rather than general tax) infrastructure projects the government may have had in mind.
 
Can the gantries and equipment be sold to another country / back to the supplier?

Other than the project cost over runs, I have no problem with the tax payers paying.
At least now everyone who pays tax (including VAT) contributes - not just the middle class.
Why should ANC voters using taxis and buses not feel the pinch too?

Hike the fuel levy by R1/litre for all I care, it's still going to be a lot cheaper than 30 cents per km.

Indeed - the major issue has never been paying for the upgrades - it has been the wasteful manner in which SANRAL were attempting to collect said money.
 
exactly, govt needs to be more efficient in thinking and spending instead of misappropriating the money we have already paid for the roads (using that money instead for other pet-projects)

Let's hope it fails soon and a full inquiry gets done as well as the companies involved (i.e. Kaapsch) get heavily fined and all their contracts are voided.
