Nice thread guys. Very helpful.

It's great to see business partners getting involved in this matter, but still government seem useless in getting involved in recycling projects. The way I see it, on the one hand people are homeless, hungry and without a job .... on the other hand we keep paying to burying our waste underground. Why not bring the two challenges together in a non-profit government generated initiative? Reason = because the public's scrap will transform into a huge Mercedes 4x4 for some government thief and his comrades

Heres an idea. Why not take all the old hardware you have that is in a working condition get it running with Linux or something and take it too the nearest charity or place that could use it.

It could go a long way to helping someone learn about computers.

Who would be willing to do this. I might be able to find a trustworthy group who willing to do this for you, and make sure you know where it ends up.

E-waste Proper disposal and correct actions

I can assure you that Desco does not ship any of the e-waste to any other country. It is all disassembled and the materials are categorized and are disposed of in a safe and environmental manner. Desco is an ISO 14001 certified recycling company. We are working with Makro and Fujitsu as you can see on our containers placed at the stores or in the photo above on the bottom right of the bin. Please feel free to email me for any information regarding recycling of electronic waste. tyrone at desco.co.za

Regarding donations of old equipment, it seems all nice and great that places get donated equipment, but how many people put in the effort of checking the donated equipment properly. What happens when a place does a donation and the stuff that was donated starts breaking down and has to be thrown away, what then? My suggestion to anyone in private home or business that wants to donate equipment, is that they should tell the people they donating to that if there are any problems with donated equipment that they dispose of it correctly by taking it to a Makro bin or bring it to us at Desco or their nearest recycling facility.

Bad idea. We have enough social problems with poverty as it is. Offloading the rage associated with getting your sound card to work on Linux onto these poor people will plunge this country into a bloody civil war.

I've been told that Incredible Connection stores all have E-Waste bins. (Specifically the one in cape town CBD, I've not seen this myself)

Someone really needs to start a website ewaste.co.za with all the dropoff points and people who pick up (with min quantity) in different areas.
I could do it, but I'd need all the info given to me in a way I can plonk online.
Its also free (green) marketing for the companies that offer it.

So just to be clear:

The Durban sites are Makro in Springfield Park. Incredible Connection are also in the vicinity. Do they still deal with e-waste? (Lope)

Behind the Pavilion, there is a recycling plant at the bottom parking area – Fudsy

Anywhere else?

In Strand, Western Cape. Essential IT Solutions, 89 George Street.

They take in any broken computer or electronic parts and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way each month.

Just my bit.

Thanks to the gov for adding depots, I'd prefer to support private companies, but I think the government ones end up there anyway?

The official outdated (despite my e-mail) Cape Town link for recycling depots (all waste types) is: http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/solidwaste/Pages/Dropofffacilities.aspx

The up to date one is on [www.capetown.gov.za > CityNews > Dec 2010 issue > p.4]. Hout Bay, Killarney, Kommetjie and Ladies' Mile have e-waste. (Non-ewaste: Durbanville facility closes 31/1, Sea Point facility now added, Schaapkraal and Simon's town now polystyrene as well.)

A Desco bakkie had an accident near the Waterfront a month ago. Unusual but effective advertising. 

I think most people are very eager to recycle, but get discouraged once they can't find a place to do it.

=====P.s for <non> e-waste====

Congrats to companies who added bins at their entrances recently:
- Builders Warehouse (late 2010), Builders Express therefore also. They have a separate slot for recyclable batteries (vs. normal batteries) because the latter have different chemicals.
- Engen (early 2011).

Some who already have it:
- Makro (including ewaste, as you say)
- Pick 'n Pay

Had it, but now disappeared?
- Woolworths.

I work in a fairly large company but being the only PC support here I find very little time to worry about our e-waste, and the stuff is just piling up!!. Unfortunately our company policy states that old Hard Drives must abide by following...

Certified Drive Sanitization (DOD 522.22-M compliant 3 pass overwrite for all hard drives), and provide proof of Sanitization via Certificate.

:wtf:

Does anyone here perhaps know if there are any third party companies based locally in Jo'Burg who does this sort of thing?

According to the same policy the equipment is not allowed to be donated. :/

Landmark Computers will soon also be a drop-off point for e-waste in Pinelands and surrounds, CPT. We're working with www.ecycle.co.za as from what we can see they have the most competent waste disposal plan of the 3 companies we approached.
All CRT screens for example are disassembled locally and the major hazardous elements are sent to Germany for recycling as it cannot be done locally (yet). They also issue certificates for all hard drives destroyed as per Bobbin's post.
