Just encountered this problem with my E172 device, running latest VMC Lite (v4.9, I think) - everything has been working great for the last 2 weeks, then suddenly tonight, I get a message when trying to connect - "RAS error code 628"

I've tried what they suggested:
- uninstalled device and then add again
- wait for a while as the device is being used by another program ??? WTF - I can't see anything else using it
- uninstalled the VMC software, then reinstalled

I get the same message every time now, and cannot connect at all. There is still balance on my pre-paid.

Nothing has changed since I used it yesterday, so I'm totally baffled.

Searching on this error brings up one entry telling me to try changing the APN, whatever that is? I cannot find it anywhere on the software settings.

Can anyone assist?

Try deleting the VMCLite connection and/or Vodafone Mobile Connect connection from Windows Network Connections. Then dialing up from the Vodafone Dashboard again just to create a new connection.

Thanks Iam3G - just tried that and no luck - I have now just uninstalled v9.4 deleted all traces of VMCLite and Vodafone from the registry, and reinstalled v9.3 - it can at least connect again, but is now showing the connection as GPRS - the speed seems to be HSDPA though.

Very weird! I'll see how it goes on v9.3 again, but I can't understand why it would suddenly start giving a "RAS error code 628" when it's been working fine for the last few weeks.

A friend of mines modem also just stoped working for some reason. Tested it on my Linux laptop and also did not work. I updated/reinstalled the firmware and now works better than ever. Have you guys tried firmware update?

Thanks ocleroux - I did the firmware update a couple of weeks ago, when I started using v9.4 VMC - it's just really strange how it stops working for no reason :)

I'll try and update it again and see if it helps.

OK...give it a shot...worth a try. Sounds very similar to what happened to my friends E220. Was working 100% the one day, the next it just bombed out. I thought, well, the poor guy is very upset and not keen to fork out cash for a new one so let me try the firmware update and then at least I can say i tried....and what you know, it works perfectly again :-)

Post here if it worked...if not then perhaps someone else can suggest another solution.

Hello guys ..

i have a similar problem .. My device keeps on telling me _ wait for a while as the device is being used by another program ? Now i went and deleted all my other connections and Reinstalled everything .. but still no luck. It's my first time using the Vodafone usb 3G modem. I'm pretty useless when it come to technical issuses :)

Please assist.
thx

I've seen this error before. It is usually another program that is interfering and using the same port VMC wants to use.

I've seen it on HP notebooks, where HP notebooks use HP Connection Manager. Once I disabled or uninstalled this program, then VMC recognised the modem and could use it as per normal.
