E1820 External Antenna Connector

Anyone have any experience with the Uniterm Direct inductive coupler in terms of positioning on the E1820?

Read this post from RichardG. I personally couldn't get it right, but maybe he can help you out.
 
Some tests with a Vodafone K4605 (Huawei E372).

No antenna: -89dBm
Poynting LPDA-A0044 + Poynting ADPT-026 (Inductive Coupler): -71dBm
Poynting LPDA-A0044 + Poynting CAB-038 (Huawei Pigtail): -59dBm

Ok, so it seems that the coupler gives better results that the pigtail connector.

Depends on who you believe ;)
Just note that unless you know exactly where the towers are in your area, it would be near impossible to properly point your antenna into the right direction if you use the pigtail.

Seeing that Cell C is giving SO much stability and zero throughput problems, I highly doubt that I will stay with them when my current contract expires. Thus I feel that the coupler is a better option, since if I move away from Cell C, the whole 900/2100 issue falls away and I can use any other modem without an external antenna connector.

I am currently testing 8ta with the Cell C branded E1820, with very good results. At my location, the physical placement of the modem/router makes a big difference with 8ta, and thus the coupler/external antenna option makes the most sense, as opposed to the pigtail/external antenna option.

Without an external antenna, the 8ta speeds are not always as good as with Cell C, but I was able to download nearly 3Gb in one go, without disconnects or zero throughput problems. The only problem now is that the modem seems to "overheat", and drop the connection. With Cell C, the connection would drop so many times, that the modem did not get a change to get hot and "overheat"! Hey, maybe that is why the Cell C connection is so unstable, to keep the modem cool and preventing warranty returns.... ;)

PS. Is there a way to find out where the Cell C towers are located?

MDMA gives the signal strength so you could find the best signal by trial and error...

If you use the pigtail connector on the E1820, the signal strength reported by the modem (and shown by MDMA) does not increase.
 
I went on a mission to find the MIMO firmware for the E1820, in the hopes that such a firmware might display the signal strength from the external antenna connector. I found version 11.865.07.00.618 for the E182E. I succesfully flashed it onto my E1820, and it reports the new firmware version although the model ID has remained E1820. According to Windows, the modem now "connects" at 28.8Mbps instead of 21.6Mbps.

Unfortunately the signal strength on the external connector is still not reported. :(

Take note: because this firmware version does not end in .00, I will probably require a Flash Code in order to revert to the stock Cell-C firmware.

It appears that the receive diversity only works on the 2100Mhz band, in addition it appears to be optional ?
According to your link, the E1820 also only does HSPA+/HSPA/UMTS at 2100MHz, but we know the version Cell-C have does HSPA+/HSPA/UMTS at 900MHz as well.

I meant what does 'receive diversity' actually mean for us in practice?
Possibly test it when using 2100Mhz tower ?

Thanks for the link. I'm going to see if it's possible to wire the existing antenna connector to the primary transceiver, while keeping the internal antenna for when I want to unplug the antenna and take the modem on the road.
