E1820 External Antenna Connector

We have done various tests on the E1820, and the connector on there (without getting too technical) is only for diversity and is not for an antenna connection. Thus the best adaptor will be our inductive coupler (universal USB adaptor ADPT-026) This following kit will significantly boost a weak signal and increase your speed drastically.

The antenna kit that comes with 7m cable and the 3G adapter cable for example the ADPT-026 (Universal USB modem to antenna adapter)
This antenna is robust and meant for a fixed, outdoor installation. The antenna has a gain of 11dBi and covers the 820 - 1000 MHz and 1710 - 2800 MHz frequency bands. (that just means it will boost any signal from GSM, GPRS, EDGE (2G), 3G, HSDPA + and up the UMTS band. It is just over 1 m long and looks very similar to an old M-Net antenna. It is supplied with a U-bolt that allows you to fit it to mount it on a pole up to 50 mm in diameter.
The propagation pattern of the antenna is +- 45 degrees and that do not mean that it needs to be pointed exactly to the base station that is 3G enabled. This is very easy to install and really a D.I.Y task. You just need to point it in the general direction of the cell phone tower and the antenna also comes with instructions on how to get the best results. So were you able to measure any improvement in terms of received signal strength, throughput or latency when using the the E1820's antenna connector?

In other words, how could you tell it is for diversity and not just disabled?

I've been trying to get a more stable signal in Sunninghill. For the most part I get pretty good speeds, but my signal strength can vary from between -79db and -98db without an external antenna.

I have the following at hand:
A-LPDA-0020 antenna
7m cable
Inductive coupler
Pigtail (think its a CAB-038)

Today I climbed onto the roof (roof of a double story ~8m up) laptop in hand a did some tests:
Baseline:
Modem plugged directly into laptop, no external antenna
RSSI: -93db, Tower ID 19141

Pigtail connected to antenna:
Direction RSSI TowerID
North -93 19141
East -93 12201
West -93 19141
South -93 12201

South East -93 19141
North East -93 19141
North West -93 19141
South West -93 13271/12201

Inductive coupler connected to antenna:
Direction RSSI TowerID
South -87 19141
East -89 19141
North -89 19141
West -83 12201

North East -91 19342
North West -87 12201
South East -91 13271
South West -95 13271

I left the antenna pointed West. This was interesting as the closest tower to me is actually 900m to the South. The tower to the west is 1.15km away, so not such a huge difference.

Tests from inside:
Baseline: -89db TowerID 12201/13271 (switches)
Speed test doesn't seem to complete

With Inductive coupler: -77db TowerID 12201

I can conclude that the pigtail is definitely the better option, however, you won't see a gain in the reported signal strength. Also, I get the feeling that the modem will still jump towers (i.e. ignoring the diversity antenna)

Please send any suggestions or anything you would like me to test out. I'm still a noob at this :)

On another note, I will most likely switch to a A-LPDA-0044-01 on Monday.

Are you saying that with the external connector is better than inductive coupler? Can you please do few more tests during different times (if possible). Sometimes only one test might give unreliable results.

...No need to climb on the roof again :D

At this point the connection died. Connecting the pigtail changes the tower back to 12201 and revives the connection

I must say that I prefer the pigtail. It works better than the inductive coupler 90% of the time. The other 10%, the modem decides it can get a better signal from tower 13271, switches to it, and then my connection dies. Connecting up the inductive coupler at this point allows me to continue as normal
 
If it changes to tower to 13271 from 12201 don't you have to re-align the antenna as well?
 
I haven't noticed that speed test were taken inside, so we already can come with some thoughts. This is unusual example because signal strenght inside is 4dBm stronger than on the roof. The internal antenna can find the same Cell ID as the external antenna and similar strenght. It makes good conditions for receive diversity operation with the external antenna connected by pigtail. The inductive coupler reduces signal by 6dBm and also kills receive diversity. It looks like receive diversity is the main contributor here.

What happen if you put modem inside metal can?
 
If it changes to tower to 13271 from 12201 don't you have to re-align the antenna as well?

In the tests above it changed when the external antenna wasn't connected. If you mean when the pigtail is connected, then yes you would have to, but seeing as I don't feel like climbing onto the roof every time this happens, its just easier to swop the pigtail out for the inductor.

Is there a site with the GPS loactions of the CellC towers so I can point my antenna at their tower. I can visually see a couple of towers but do not know which is the CellC one, especially as I get better reception pointing the sticjk in a completely different direction.

I have swopped my antenna for a A-LPDA-0044-01. Haven't really had the time to align it properly, right now its in the general direction of tower 12201.
I don't have a can available at present, best I could do was a mettle salad bowl:

If you own a Jailbroken iPhone, you can download an App from Cydia store called 'Signal'. This will show you, on a google map, all the towers around you, signal strength of each tower, as well as the tower you are currently connected to. You will obviously need a cell c sim in the iphone. :)

Fixed that for you, the 3G and 3GS don't do UMTS 900.
 
That's cool, any Android applications that can do this ?

I refuse to buy Apple products, just too restrictive.
 
So what's the easiest to get a hold of cheap, retail antenna, that is easy to use and works well?

They are only restrictive if you do not jailbreak them. Jailbreaking opens up another world of possibilities!

Anyways, back on topic, no android twin AFAIK
