E1820 External Antenna Connector

Might need one of those as well if i move pc to study to get better reception/speeds.

ginggs: It is so simple.... stupid!

I looked at the block diagrams of some Qualcom tranceiver chips and everything becomes clear. There is no transmitting diversity. There is no word of it in the specs, isn't? Signal is transmitted by the main antenna only. If external antena is plugged-in to the diversity channel like in case of E1820, modem can hear but is dumb unless tower is able to pickup weak and distorted signal from the main antenna.

The guy who invented this is complete idiot. period.

I might disappear for a while... waiting so long...my Virgin airtime is gone and now Vodacom costs me R2/meg to post this message. :-(
 
My results with the E1820 modem with the Poynting LPDA-A0044-7m antenna + a 5m extension cable with the universal coupler over the modem:
Gone from not even being able to login/authenticate on HSPA with signal of -107ish dBm to now having 3-4 bars(-93dBm)
Mouse-over the signal strength bars on the CellC dash shows +/- 70% signal strength.

NB: seems with the universal coupler the strength bars DO increase on the CellC dash
Happy Camper, R1500 later tho - R200 odd less if you don't need the extra 5m of cable
Poynting also has a Durban branch now for those that aren't aware of that.

Very easy.
Take 75mm wire (0.5 dia) and plug into 1820 antenna connector. bend it 5mm fom the modem that it stay vertically. Don't push it into the modem more than 4-5mm. Working 100%.

I'm glad you're seeing an improvement. :)

I think that you are shown 3-4 bars or 70% (of what?) signal strength is misleading.
Have a look at How to check Signal Strength, you're just into the "Workable under most conditions" range.
 
Can anyone suggest a cell c compatible modem with a proper external antenna interface?
 
They don't give full specification for this antenna and measurements, so we cannot compare it with poynting.
 
In that photo it looks identical to Poynting's LPDA-A0044.

If you display all 3g antennas, then change Show by Manufacturer to Poynting antennas, this is the one that is displayed. So it must be a Poynting.
 
Have searched up whole internet, and cannot find normal name for CRC9 connector. Need male connector for my small DIY antenna from TV, connecting it with untraditional methods improved my connection on double, but needs a connector. Not really want to fork out R1000 for a special antenna, if I have common one working already. Please, can anyone help me? :)
 
I'm trying out a new pigtail from Poynting for the ZTE modems, so far have tried it on the K4505-Z and K3805-Z. In both cases there's a noticeable boost in the RSSI when connecting the pigtail, in my case about 20dBm. It works on the UMTS 900 and UMTS 2100 bands.

Post about the modems on Cell-C UMTS 900 here.

Please post your impressions about these modems, particularly interested in K4505-Z in comparison to Huawei. Did you mean pigtail - not inductive coupler?
