How different are the 2 devices? The reason i ask it that they look the same with only having a external connector available, everything else seems software based.

What i wanna know is can u flash ur 220 with the 272 firmware and get the benefits of the 272 model?

Why i ask is cause of this new story http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Cellular/3925.html

"Users of the standard Vodafone Mobile Connect Card, Vodafone USB Modem Huawei E220 and built-in HSDPA 3.6 Laptop modules will not be able to access Vodacom’s HSUPA service."

which is a bit ***, heck how many ppl are using the new modems...

I have the E272 on my notebook and the Bandrich C100 on my wifes notebook and their performance is about the same.
What I understand is that the only gain with the E272 is the higher upload speed.

I have not opted to continue with the 3.6 mbps that was free for the trial period, and I'm not sure if this impacts on the below speed results.

PE @ 16:25
Download Speed: 1752 kbps (219 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 269 kbps (33.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

The limitation is not from Vodacom, the older modems just don't support the new coding schemes needed for UPA.

Would the E272 software be done gradeable? Why I ask is I'm not a fan of the VMC software and would prefer loading mobile partner which I currently am enjoying on my E220...

I was also a fan of Mobile Partner, but VMCLite version 3.0.3.156 works excellent. Haven t had any problems since loading it.

I just got a E272 so I assume it's the latest although why is it displaying Huawei 9.3.0.8940 as my software version? I don't see that version of VMC lite available for down load at the vodacom site. Did you find it there?

I got it a day after it was released - It's a good modem.

mmmmm... I tell you what, I been impressed and enjoying my E220. The E272? Not sure hey.... Not sure... I'll be happy if I can get rid of this VMC software... Not a fan... So far I've experienced a number of disconnects. Also the modem or the modem and the software seems to be conflicitng with other programs. The cd rom issue I believe. Need to read up on the remedy posted some where here on myadsl...

The E272 comes with a lite version of 9.3. Still looks like the full version though.

E220 is a great, reliable modem, never had problems with it, the e272 still needs to prove itself .

Agreed. I must be honest at the moment this E272 is proving to be a bit of a lemon... I aint getting any joy out of it. Disconnects regularly and appears to be conflicting with other apps...

Why do you think it's the cause?
Not sure, signal fluctuates between 2 AND 3 bar so could be disconnects. Could be firewall, could be anti virus. Using it on a system with Micros loaded which is a retail package that doesn't like new software introduced... getting around 350kbps on the vodacom speed test which is shocking. I must be missing a setting of sorts...

Not a fan of VMC... Sorry v3g but it doesn't work for me... however mobile partner does...

No problem, your choice. I'm just worried you expect the dash to fix connectivity problems which it can't.
No, I have realistic expectations:D I'm hoping the mobile partner dash is more amicable with other apps and strangely it seemed to do the trick with my E220. I recall all sorts of issues trying to use Nero with the modem connected. Nero would take ages to initiate. Once I changed the dash it worked the way it was designed too... There must be issues with how the dash is representing the modem, as a mass storage device, a cd rom etc You and others have covered this flaw extensively on this forum but I'm battling to find the thread:rolleyes::confused: Will keep looking...:)

Where can I download the latest version of mobile partner? Can someone please forward me the specific link.

Most likely something else changed at that point. The way the modem is presented to the OS is part of the FIRMWARE and is independent of the dash, neither VMC nor MP will interfere or get involved in this process.

I.e. the dash does not present the modem to the OS, the modem's own firmware does this and the issues with the E220 presenting itself as a CD-drive confuses the cr@p out of programs like Nero.

I suspect that when you switched a firmware upgrade also happened and this fixed your problem with Nero. (which is a well know problem with the E220, BTW. Irrespective of which dash you use.)

Or you might have tried the various suggestions on this forum and turned off the drive-letter of the E220.

Both of these could have fixed the problem at that time. But I'm pretty sure it was not the dash.
