Again, the modem is not being picked up by the laptop though all other USB devices are, and the modem works on other laptops.

This time its not an Acer, its a HP Compaq 6720s. The modem has the latest firmware.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Notebook's OS & firmware versions?

Check for and apply updated BIOS from HP, then check for and apply updated USB drivers, then disable any and all CD|DVD humping apps that might be too fond of the E220.

Windows XP , firmware version is this : http://41.192.255.27/vcozadoc/services/3g/downloads/option/VMCLite_E220_3_2_1_156_standard.zip

Think updating the drivers may help?

cd humping?:> uuuh? dont know that one.
Nope, AFAIK VMC-Lite v3 does not include a firmware update - that is only an iso image update that gets stored on the E220's internal flash drive memory.

Try the following firmware version update: http://41.192.255.27/vcozadoc/services/3g/downloads/option/E220Update_11.110.05.00.00(3.6M%20Vista).zip

If that doesn't work with heXPee then there is a previous firmware version that was discussed yesterday or the day before in another thread, but I don't think there's a link to the firmware.

Currently updating every driver, then I will try that. (Flashing the bios as we speak)

ok, like nothing usb is working now, plugged in a mouse and its not being picked up, anyone else know of hp laptops losing their usbness?:>

hmm.. i think it was the modem that caused the mouse not to be picked up when i tried. i rebooted and the mouse works, but ive taken all the advice above, and its not working. it makes a sound like its picking the modem up, and you get that safely remove hardware icon for a bit, but then it goes away.

Applications trying to use the CD\DVD ROM or CD\DVD Virtual drives :)

I've seen it alot, fixed most of it.

Try ending random processes in Task Manager then re-insert the modem.

When I try bootup with the modem in, it says XP loading, and then the screen goes blank. it just hangs there, if i take the modem out, it boots up... *confused*

First start with the ones that has an obvious interest in CD-drives.

Virus, Spyware, Malware scanners, CD writing software, etc.

The problem often is the way the Huawei presents itself as a CD Drive. These programs then try to access it as a CD drive and then get royally confused...

Ja that happens. Dunno why. On some occasion it goes through without having to remove it.

If you find a Process called "FixCamera.exe", remove it. It totally stops VMCLite from starting.

Wipe Windows and start fresh. It'll save you alot of time.
Hmmm, you know that w1z4rd much prefers Ubuntu :p :D.

It happens bcos the PC's BIOS thinks the E220 is a bootable CDROM, and then tries to boot from it, changing the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the HDD first will bypass this issue...

nothing.. i know this machine has xp installed, but it looks like it was designed for vista.

Could this issue be somehow related?

When i plug the usb modem in, a cd drive pops up for a second under my computer, but when you try access it, it says the drive is no longer avaliable.

I have removed everything I can from my startup.ini, and I have disabled any services I think might have influence. still no go :(

Perhaps I should try the vista firmware or something?

Grrrr, this is a friend of mines laptop. I would love to install linux on it, then the problem would be resolved in 20 min... but no... he has to use windows. I feel dirty :( freeken lame OS.

On a side note, i wonder if hp software or something is preventing the drive from being installed or something?

First try disabling autorun in XP, then reboot & login again, then see if you get any further.

If that doesn't help, then I recommend that you try the Vista firmware update on a different heXPee machine that is known to work with that E220.

If you have administratively killed running processes, and disabled autorun, then there is not much more that you can do AFAIK to prevent applications from humping the E220's iso image.

Maybe you could install Ubuntu and theme Ubuntu so it looks similar :D.

nothing, niks, nada :( Perhaps a non-vodafone firmware or something? This is the 3rd laptop I am working on that vodacom will be losing a client to. This is painful :(
