Hi there,

Got this Huawei E220 modem from a user which belongs to the company (the user reported it was a troublesome card). Tried to install it on a brand new Dell laptop with XP SP3 he is supposed to be getting but it only got so far as detecting it as E:\. I could manually install the software from the card but the software did not detect the modem.

Then after trying and trying I decided to install it on a desktop nearby which I know has had no difficulty with 3G cards in the past. Same thing happened...it just would not pick up the modem off the card even on another PC.

Went into Vodacom website and tried the latest software...that too failed to pick up the card after installing. I notice no Modem Driver in Device Manager and I also notice the device sounds when a device is added on a PC don't go off and on twice like I have always noticed in the past with these modems.

Went into Vodacom again for latest firmware upgrade. Followed instructions and got to the part where it was trying to update device. I immediately noticed the E:\ disappear off MyComputer as it was trying to update but the Vodacom software popped up automatically but no detections. I thought this was odd as they didn't mention that would happen in the instruction but left it to do it's own thing. After a while the progress bar was still on Zero and an error popped up saying it failed to update the card.

From there on the card is now completely dead...no light no nothing when I plug it into any PC.

Is there anything else I can try? Where do I stand? Can I take this card back to Vodacom even if it is not under any sort of warranty I believe?

FYI I have installed more than 40 of these things before so I know for a fact this card was/is troublesome.

Best is probably to take it to a VodaCare store, or better, to the Data Support Centre in the Midrand offices, for them to take a look at the card. They'll either tell you it's fixable or not.

You killed it!

Head on down to your nearest Vodacare to have them send it away.

There's been reports of E220's being bricked during the firmware upgrade.

Which version did you install?

The thing is it belongs to the company not to me :/ I don't really support these things only install them. Will get the one who handles this to help me...will see if we can replace or have to purchase another.

The one currently on their website as we speak...E220Update_11.117.09.04.00.B268.exe. I think it's the latest? But I suspect the update didn't go smoothly because of the device being faulty in the first place...not sure though. Like I said...from the get go something seemed wrong...

I took out the SIM...plugged card into USB...saw that it was in MyComputer as E:\...Opened the update file...it detected the card...followed the prompt and clicked on next/ok to update...then almost immediately the E:\ vanished from Mycomputer followed with the "device add/remove sound" but the Vodacom Connect Software popped up with "no device". I just left it there as I did not want to touch during update but eventually an error appeared telling me it failed. The progress bar was still on Zero and from that moment on the device is dead :(

As instructed I did ensure that I closed the Vodacom connect software first before running the update. Not sure why it tried to come back up as soon as the E:\ disappeared. :/
