Gross, but even if the salary ranges you mentioned are nett then they're still a bit low.

Edit: R30k nett is around R39,000 gross. I know many people in their mid to late 20s doing R40,000 gross ctc monthly.

It all depends on the industry. I have friends doing law and one is close to that (40k) and is 23. I also have friends in my industry who is making around 6.5k a month with a masters degree in research psychology

Industry and location, I totally agree. Hence my "poverty spec call centre industry" quip earlier. I know there are things like Psychology, Journalism and most of academia that pay next to nothing despite monster qualifications and experience. There are also industries where with little more than matric you can pull over R30,000 gross in your 20s.

By location I think Durban isn't that bad, but JHB is almost 100% better in salary. I work in Pietermaritzburg (not by choice, company's major project is here) and as such I've been getting a salary based on that of those people working in the area. Safe to say that it is pathetic

Our nurses are making more than me, and they are quitting because of terrible salary. We have lost 75% of them within a week

Bud, seems like you should move for greener pastures. Life's too short to be underpaid, especially as badly as you mention.

This is very much a "How long is a piece of string" question - but I am interested,

What should one be earning in their late 20s to be "doing well", or at least be in line with the average [within the skilled work force]

*edit I didn't notice a similar finance question asked 4 posts below :(

Depends on alot of things as you say - Industry, job, location, expectation .....

Usually the job should be graded, and age a lesser issue (Hay or Petterson grade is normal)

The thread about sums it up - 20s - R9k to 25k CTC. Takehome different.
If you stay in the same company - same job inflationary increases apply.

Promotion or job hopping usually adds to the number.

Probably depends heavily on field of study. If you reach the age of 30 and you are only earning 20k in the software industry you are failing hard and your boss is really screwing you over (unless you live in PE :p )

Can't let that pass. I am on a JHB salary living in PE, so have the best of both worlds :)

Are we talking nett? I know no one in my age group (mid - late 20s) that earns 30k+ nett
You don't know enough people. Most of my circle of friends break the 30k barrier nett and we're in 27-29.

That's definitely first prize. Unfortunately I'm in the wrong industry for that :(

Kinda...various industries have different trajectories.
I know, so I looked at age... It also depends on each individual's standard of living. Some folks are happy to survive on R5k per month while others can never get enough.

My gross salary ranged from 20k - 120k/m (latter when I went overseas) in my 20's (so over 10 years ago).

Yeah but you're hardly what one can call the norm... Although, from what I hear, $140k pa is good but not crazy good if you live in an expensive place like New York. Might be wrong though as I've never had the opportunity to go there, never mind work there.

In most of the country a household income of $140k/pa (don't forget that med/dental/vision/life-insurance are usually almost entirely paid for by the company, and that there are usually cash and/or stock bonuses on top of that, and the tax rate is generally less) is really good. You right - in New York, you would do ok, but only if you don't live in a trendy area (Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn) - if you do, you may be able to stretch to rent or buy a 40-50 sq.m. bachelor apartment). In Silicon Valley, it's quite a bit better, but you're looking at living in an oldish house and/or a reasonably nice condo. For NY and SV, $140k isn't a great household income - most experienced professionals in those areas earn quite a bit more.
